Faculty of Engineering | Manufacturing Engineering Department
Call for real case projects (Facility Design)
The project will be implemented in an industrial factory producing water meters located in 10th
of Ramadan. The industrial plant has two sections to be analyzed for cost reduction. The sections
can be as follows:
•
•
Cutting and sandblasting/ cleaning section
Core making section
The cost reduction process follows a structured sequence to identify and implement
improvements in various aspects of facility design and operations. The key steps include:
1. Product and Process Analysis
•
•
Analyze the product and production process to find cost-saving opportunities.
Identify inefficiencies in existing workflows and equipment usage.
2. Departmental and Flow Analysis
•
•
•
Study existing departmental setups and workflows.
Identify redundancies and bottlenecks to streamline operations.
Develop an optimal activity relationship and flow diagram.
3. Material Handling System Review
•
•
Assess the current material handling system for inefficiencies.
Propose improved equipment or methods to reduce costs.
4. Facility Layout Optimization
•
•
Reallocate areas based on space utilization and constraints.
Improve layout for better workflow and reduced movement waste.
5. Auxiliary Services and Office Requirements
•
•
Study support functions and identify opportunities for cost savings.
Optimize personal requirements and office space for efficiency.
6. Continuous Improvement and Implementation
•
•
•
Collect feedback from employees to gain insights into potential cost
reductions.
Implement changes in manufacturing, material handling, and facility layout
Monitor performance and adjust as needed.
