Final Debate Speech (For the Motion: Spiritual Gifts Can Be Used for
Personal Financial Gain)
Opening Statement
Honorable judges, esteemed opponents, and audience, today we debate the motion:
"Spiritual gifts can be used for personal financial gain." I stand for the motion and will
prove, with scripture and logic, that using spiritual gifts to earn a living is not only
acceptable but also biblically supported.
Definitions
1. Spiritual Gifts are Special abilities given by God through the Holy Spirit to believers
for service.
1 Corinthians 12:7 (NKJV): “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to
each one for the profit of all.”
o
Examples include preaching, teaching, prophecy, healing, music,
administration, and word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, etc… (1
Corinthians 12:8-10).
2. Ministry is any service done for God’s work, including preaching, worship,
evangelism, and gospel music.
o Ephesians 4:11-12 (NKJV): “And He Himself gave some to be apostles,
some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the
equipping of the saints for the work of ministry.”
Main Argument
Mr. Chairman, while spiritual gifts are freely given by God, the work of ministry
requires time, effort, and financial resources. The Bible supports ministers receiving
financial assistance.
1. To begin with, we strongly believe that Preachers and Gospel Ministers Deserve
Financial Support because they dedicate their lives to ministry. That is full-time
ministers. This is rooted in the scripture in;
o 1 Corinthians 9:14 (NKJV): “The Lord has commanded that those who
preach the gospel should live from the gospel.”
o 1 Timothy 5:18 (NKJV): “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”
o Galatians 6:6 (NKJV): “Let him who is taught the word share in all good
things with him who teaches.”
To our opponents, if pastors, gospel musicians, and teachers dedicate their
lives to ministry, shouldn’t they be supported financially?
2. Honourable panel, Our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ Himself and Apostle Paul
Accepted Financial Assistance. If we read;
o
o
o
o
Luke 8:3 (NKJV) – Women financially supported Jesus’ ministry.
Philippians 4:15-17 (NKJV) – The Philippians sent money to Paul multiple
times.
2 Corinthians 11:8-9 (NKJV) – Paul took wages from churches to minister.
Acts 18:3-5 (NKJV) – Paul worked as a tentmaker until financial support
arrived, then focused fully on ministry.
So, If Apostle Paul and Jesus Christ received support, why shouldn’t
modern-day ministers?
3. Ministry Requires Resources
o Preachers, gospel musicians, and teachers need microphones, musical
instruments, transportation, and study materials.
o Without financial support, churches and ministries would struggle or even
collapse.
o The Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) teaches that God expects us
to use and multiply our gifts;which includes sustaining ministry work
through financial means.
We will like to humbly ask our colleagues on the other side , If you believe that
ministers should not receive financial support for their work, how do you propose that
churches, gospel musicians, and teacherswho dedicate their time and resources to ministry
sustain their work, especially considering the high costs of materials, equipment, and other
ministry needs?"
4. The house our final point, the Levites were the not given a portion of the
land when the Israelites divided the Promised Land (Joshua 13:14). Instead, they
were dedicated to spiritual service;working in the temple, leading worship, offering
sacrifices, and teaching the people.
Numbers 18:21 (NKJV): “Behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tithes in
Israel as an inheritance in return for the work which they perform, the work of the
tabernacle of meeting.”
Because they did not have land or a regular source of income, the Levites were
supported through the tithes of the people;a model of God's provision for those who
dedicate their lives to ministry.
1 Corinthians 9:13-14 (NKJV): “Do you not know that those who minister the holy
things eat of the things of the temple? And those who serve at the altar partake of the
offerings of the altar. Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel
should live from the gospel.”
Just as the Levites were sustained by the tithes, modern-day ministers, who also serve
God's people in various ways, should similarly be supported financially for their
spiritual work.
So again, "If the Levites, who were dedicated to full-time service in the temple and did not
own land, were supported by the tithes of the people, how can you argue that ministers
today—who devote themselves to serving God's people in similar ways—should not receive
financial support?"
Rebuttals to Common Objections
Objection 1: “Matthew 10:8 says, ‘Freely you have received, freely give.’”
Response:
This refers to miraculous gifts, not general ministry work.
1 Corinthians 9:14 (NKJV) – “Those who preach the gospel should live from the
gospel.”
→ Preaching, worship, and teaching require effort and should be supported.
Objection 2: “Paul never took money for ministry.”
Response:
False! Paul received financial help:
o Philippians 4:15-17 (NKJV) – The Philippians sent financial aid multiple
times.
o 2 Corinthians 11:8-9 (NKJV) – Paul took wages from churches to minister.
o Acts 18:3-5 (NKJV) – Paul worked as a tentmaker until he received
financial support, then focused on ministry.
Objection 3: “Jesus chased the money changers out of the temple (Matthew
21:12-13), so making money in God’s name is wrong.”
Response:
The money changers were exploiting worshippers by overcharging them, which is
different from honest financial support for ministry.
1 Timothy 5:18 (NKJV) – “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”
→ Financial support for ministry is biblical, but exploitation is wrong.
Objection 4: “Acts 8:18-20 (Simon the Sorcerer) proves that making money
from spiritual gifts is sinful.”
Response:
Simon was rebuked because he tried to buy the power of the Holy Spirit, not
because ministers received financial help.
1 Corinthians 9:14 (NKJV) – Preachers should be supported financially.
→ There is a difference between buying God’s power and earning a living from
ministry.
Conclusion
✔ The Bible supports financial assistance for preachers, gospel musicians, and teachers.
✔ Jesus and Paul accepted financial help, proving it is not a sin.
✔ Ministry requires time and resources—without financial support, churches would
collapse.
Therefore, spiritual gifts can be used for personal financial gain, as long as it is done
ethically and in service to God.
Final Question to Opponents:
"If Paul, one of the greatest apostles, accepted financial support for his ministry, why should
modern-day ministers be denied the same?"
