Computer System Architecture
Tutorial 1:
1. Give two examples for Computer Architecture and Computer Organization.
The examples of Computer Architecture are instruction set and number of bits while the
examples of Computer Organization are control signals and the memory technology.
2. Give the meaning of structure and function in each level of computer system.
The structure of the computer system is from operating environment going to next level
which is data movement apparatus, then go to next level which is control mechanism
and then go to last level which are data storage facility and data processing facility. Data
movement used to do data communications, control used to control algorithm for all
the other function and it is used define. Data storage used to store either short term or
long term. Data processing used to process data.
3. State the 4 function of computer.
Data processing, data storage, data movement, and control.
4. What is the function of data processing in computer?
Computer used to process data.
5. Which type of process involves all 4 function of Computer?
Data processing that involve the storage and the external environment.
6. What is the main structure of the CPU? Explain function of the structures.
The main structure of the CPU are control unit, arithmetic and logic unit (ALU), registers
and CPU interconnection. Control unit is used to controls the operation of the CPU and
hence the computer. Arithmetic and logic unit (ALU) performs the computer’s data
processing functions. Registers provides storage to the CPU internally. CPU
interconnection provides communication between control unit, ALU and register.
7. What is the switches used in the EDVAC?
It used vacuum tubes as switches.
8. What is the main different of IBM 7094 with the IAS computer?
The use of data channels. IBM 7094 has data channel while the IAS computer does not
have.
9. What are the two elements used in integrated circuits for processing and storage?
Gate and memory cell.
10. What is the main disadvantage of ferromagnetic material memory?
Ferromagnetic material memory is expensive and destructive readout.
