STRATEGIC LOCATION
• The empire was centered around the middle reaches of the Niger
River which facilitated trade and communication. This trade routes
and engages in commerce with other regions.
• The Songhai Empire's strategic location along the Niger River and at
the crossroads of major trans-Saharan trade routes facilitated efficient
transportation, commerce, and access to valuable resources like gold
and salt. This, coupled with cultural exchanges, the spread of Islam, and
political alliances, contributed to the empire's economic prosperity,
political influence, and military power, making it one of the largest and
most powerful empires in West African history.
STRONG LEADERSHIP
• Leaders like Sunni Ali and Askia Muhammed played crucial roles in
expanding and consolidating the empire. Their military prowess and
administrative skills helped to stabilize and strengthen the empire.
