Lab 1: Assessing the Physical and
Logical Network Infrastructure
This report is in relation to the creation of physical and logical documentation for the IP
data network infrastructure of the company. Utilizing the appropriate software to connect
to the gateway router for the network allowed me to retrieve the information for the
Network Documentation. This included collecting the IP addresses for the network,
identifying the router information, and creating an IT Asset Inventory list.

The steps involved in the process went smoothly for the most part. I did have some
trouble pinpointing the exact operating system for all the IP addresses on the network.
There was little issue involved in identifying the network devices as well as the adjacent
networks in the system.
The process of completing the mapping for the network started by using the PuTTy
software to connect remotely to the network devices. I was then able to record the
physical layer, data layer and IP configuration information. While recording the Asset
information I did experience some issues with confirming the operating systems for all
the routers on the network. I unfortunately ran out of time to complete the search and
needed to leave a couple of the sections incomplete.
As mentioned above I was unable to complete the IT Asset tab of the networking
documentation. There were a couple of the routers that I received a “host seems down”
error and was unable to find a solution. I am unsure if the mistake was mine or an error
in the router or software. The other main issue I encountered was in attempting to
generate an HTML report from Nmap. I ran the scans and the information was
complete. When I tried to get the file to export to the desktop it would not create the file.
I received a failure to resolve error. I spent several hours working on finding a fix but
was unable to make it work. I finally got an export of the file by sending the report to the
documents folder rather than the desktop. By doing this the report worked and I was
able to include it in the final lab report.
