Exploring E17
What do the longest street-market in the UK, the
largest urban wetland nature reserve In Europe,
and an award winning design museum have in
common? You can find them all in the same London
neighbourhood, Walthamstow.
Walthamstow has grown from a small village on the
edge of London to one of its most vibrant areas.
In recent years there has been lots of regeneration
and it has transformed from an unfashionable area at
the end of one of the underground lines, to a lively
and trendy neighbourhood with cool shops and cafes;
it was even chosen as the London Borough of Culture
in 2019!
One of the things it is best-known for is its street
market, which takes place five days a week on one of
the main streets. The market, which has been
running since 1885, is about a kilometre long. You
can buy all sorts of things there, from fresh fruit
and vegetables to household goods, antiques and
Caribbean street food.
Another great place to visit is the William Morris
Gallery. William Morris, whose wallpaper and furniture
designs are famous around the world, was an artist,
designer, poet and activist. He lived in Walthamstow in
the 19th Century and his house has now been turned
into a beautiful museum which displays his work.

place to live.
