How to balance the relationship
between
technology
and
emotional intelligence.
Summary of key factors.
Emotional Intelligence is the ability to manage one’s own feelings and being able to
understand how other people feels certain things, and it is an awareness of your
actions and feelings and how they affect those around you. Emotional Intelligence
helps you build strong relationships with people, however, recently this has been
impacted by the adoption of technology in certain manners. This essay examines the
connection between emotional intelligence and technology in relationships through a
cause-and-effect lens and how technology influences relationships by altering
emotional connections, encouraging superficial interactions, and creating a
dependency that weakens traditional social skills.
When technology first emerged, many people were hesitant about whether to adopt it
or not. However, over time, it impacted their social lives and emotional intelligence in
both positive and negative ways. One positive effect of technology on emotional
intelligence is that if two people are in a long-distance relationship, they can easily
stay in contact. They can see each other through pictures and video calls, hear each
other’s voices, and express their emotions more explicitly. In this way, technology has
helped humans interact and build connections digitally without needing to meet in
person. Although this is an amazing effect of technology, it eventually lowers a
person’s confidence in understanding others and interacting with different people.
Additionally, Haddock et al. (2022) state, "A positive effect of technology on emotional
intelligence is its ability to enhance self-regulation and emotional awareness. For
example, studies have shown that digital tools and platforms can provide individuals
with feedback on their emotional states, helping them identify and manage emotions
effectively. Applications designed for mindfulness, mood tracking, and social
connection contribute to improved emotional regulation and overall well-being"
(Haddock et al., 2022; Frontiers, 2023).
When it comes to the negative effects of technology on emotional intelligence,
nowadays, humans are totally dependent on the use of technology for different daily
tasks. For example, for a person who mostly uses digital communications it will be
hard to communicate with others face-to-face, and how to understand one’s body
language. In regard to the effects of over-reliance on technology, the Grouport Therapy
Journal in their study The Impact of Technology on Social Skills states that “Non-verbal
cues, such as body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice, are essential to
in-person communication. These nuances can often be lost in digital communication,
potentially leading to misunderstandings.” From the above statement, it is true that
technology is highly affecting in-person communications because nowadays, many
people have built a counterfeit personality on social media and we can easily be tricked
by them and eventually affecting our emotional intelligence. Therefore, it’s arduous in
this era to get to know the other person well enough and having the fear of not getting
hoaxed by someone.
In conclusion, the relationship between emotional intelligence and technology is
complex, with both positive and negative effects. In my opinion, we need to balance
between the positive and negative usage of technology so that it doesn’t affect our
emotional intelligence. We humans created fire, and it has many advantages if used
correctly, in contrast, at the same time it has many disadvantages and it could easily
burn everything. Therefore, we need to keep track of what we are doing and not to
depend too much on technology for which we forget how to understand others and
how to feel for certain things.
