Term 1
Strand 1: Life and living
Topic 1:
Photosynthesis
and respiration
Photosynthesis and
respiration
• Opposite processes:
• Photosynthesis - CO₂ is required to
produce glucose and O₂ is given off
as a by-product.
• Respiration – O₂ is used to produce
energy by breaking down glucose and
CO₂ is given off as a by-product.
What is photosynthesis?
What is photosynthesis?
• Plants contains the green pigment –
chlorophyll
• Chlorophyll is able to trap the radiant
energy from the sun and convert it into
glucose.
• What do plants require:
• Water from the soil
• Carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air
• What does the plant release and make:
• Oxygen O₂
• Glucose is produced
• Chemical word equation for
photosynthesis
chlorophyll
Carbon dioxide + water
glucose + oxygen
sunlight
• Photosynthesis: process where a green
plant (chlorophyll) uses radiant energy
from the sun together with carbon
dioxide and water, in a series of
chemical reactions, to make glucose
and release oxygen.

Stick resource 3 in your book
For homework:
• Stick resources 1 and 2 in you book and
complete.
• Write down the keywords on page 2,3
and 4
Unit 2 Respiration
• Energy is released from food through the
process of respiration.
• Structures responsible for respiration:
mitochondria in plant and animal cells.
Respiration
oxygen
Glucose
Energy = ATP
Carbon
dioxide
water
• Chemical word equation:
Glucose + Oxygen
energy + Carbon dioxide + water
• When animals breath out, or exhale,
carbon dioxide is returned to the
atmosphere.
• To test –lime water experiment p6 and 7
Clear limewater
Milky limewater
Scientific method
1. Aim:
What do you want to find out with the
experiment?
2. Hypothesis:
A guess of your result.
3. Method:
step by step of how you are going to
perform the experiment.
4. Results:
What did you see (observe)?
5. Conclusion and discussion:
Now you need to discuss your results and
reject or accept your hypothesis.

5. Conclusion and discussion:
Remove leaf and place in hot water.
Remove leaf from water and place in test
tube with alcohol
Place test tube in boiling water for a few
minutes
Remove leaf from alcohol and rinse in hot
water
Spread leaf on petri dish and add iodine.
Class Test
1. Write a chemical word equation for
respiration
2. Write the chemical word equation for
photosynthesis
3. Name 2 things needed for respiration
4. Which product is formed during
photosynthesis?
