Welcome to The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide for Learning a New Language on Your Own.
When I started to learn Spanish in 2016, I wanted to learn without taking classes,
without the help of teachers, without traveling, and without spending a lot of money.
I successfully taught myself to speak fluent Spanish in about 2 years using the methods
and tools I learned about through my research on polyglots. Polyglots almost always
learn without classes, teachers, traveling, or spending money. Modern technology has
made learning a new language more accessible and affordable than ever before.
However, it can be confusing with all of the different methods and options available on
the internet.
Many language learning products try to “do it all.” They claim that by using their method
for 10 minutes a day you’ll be fluent in 3 months. This is impossible for most people.
Almost nobody becomes fluent in a new language in 3 months. You’re probably a
normal person with a normal brain.
Don’t let that discourage you. I wrote this guide for normal people with normal brains. I
consider myself to be a normal person with a normal brain and I have managed to teach
myself a couple of languages. Many people learn faster than I do and with less effort.
That’s ok. I try not to compare myself to other people. I succeeded because I have an
effective method, good discipline, and a consistent, daily study routine. If you want
to learn a new language by yourself, this is what you need. In this guide, I’m going to
help you develop all of these things.
There is no language course or app that can do it all. Some of them do a few things
really well. Instead of using one app, one course, or one method, we’re going to combine
different apps, courses, and methods to create the ultimate synergy of resources. This is
much more powerful than depending on just one method or app, giving you more
control over your learning process.

Core Resources
I call these core resources because they help you build a solid foundation with the
language. Without a solid foundation, you become prone to ingrained mistakes that can
be very difficult to fix later. As a complete beginner, you should complete all of the core
resources focusing on pronunciation first. As you develop clear and correct
pronunciation, you can shift your focus to more vocabulary and grammar.

maximize your learning by incorporating the resources into your daily and weekly study
routine.

I’ve calculated exactly how much time you need to spend with each learning resource
and organized it into a weekly study routine: Beginner Weekly Study Routine.
Input
As a beginner, you should focus as much as possible on your core resources. Once you
have established a core vocabulary and a basic understanding of Spanish grammar, then
you can spend more time enjoying some input of your choice. Please ignore this section
if you are struggling to keep up with the core resources. If you have enough time in your
schedule for all of the core resources and more, then you can spend some time getting
some input.
