Think about the question as you read Sadie’s answer. Sadie Caddock, Animator Interviewer: What is the best part about your job as an animator? Sadie Caddock: I love getting a chance to bring a character to life. If I can imagine it, I can make it happen on the screen. It’s a great feeling. Interviewer: What was your favorite project? Sadie Caddock: My favorite project was a movie called It’s a Zoo Out There. Unlike commercials and TV shows, a full-length movie lets you explore the characters and story. I worked with a fun team of animators to create more than thirty animal characters. Interviewer: How long does it take you to finish a project? Sadie Caddock: It depends. A short commercial might take me a week to finish my part of it. The movie took more than a year. It also depends on whether I’m drawing by hand or using a computer. Computers make the work go much faster. However, I sometimes find that drawing by hand is more creative. STRATEGY PRACTICE SKILL PRACTICE Did you understand all of Sadie Caddock’s answers? READ THE PASSAGE The Famous Rockettes Imagine a long line of dancers performing a difficult high kick at exactly the same time. That was the vision of Russell Markert, who came up with the idea for the Rockettes back in 1925. The Rockettes, an all-female dance group, have come a long way with their high kicks. They have performed at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City since its opening in 1932. The goal of the Rockettes is for all of the dancers to make the same movements at the exact same time, as if they were one person rather than 36. This task requires a lot of practice, skill, and cooperation. The Rockettes perform in more than 200 shows over a two-month period. The schedule requires a huge commitment from the dancers. Over the years, more than 3,000 women have danced as Rockettes. They say that performing with the group is a dream come true, despite the long hours of practice and the demanding schedule. They love it when the audience stands and cheers. STRATEGY PRACTICE SKILL PRACTICE Write about a time when you saw an athlete or performer do something amazing. How did remembering that event help you understand the passage? Read each question. Fill in the bubble next to the correct answer. 1. According to the passage, what are the Rockettes best known for? READ THE PASSAGE Cockroach Fun Facts When you think of interesting animals, you probably don’t picture the common cockroach. However, although this insect isn’t very pretty, it is pretty amazing. Cockroaches are good at getting around. They can squeeze into very tight spaces, which comes in handy when they want to go through cracks in walls. A baby cockroach can flatten itself as thin as a dime. They’re fast-moving bugs, too. Traveling at three miles an hour, a cockroach can easily scurry out of the way of looming feet or bug swatters. Cockroaches are also tough. They can survive a month without food and a week without water. They can even survive for weeks without a head! Next time you see a cockroach, show some respect for this common household pest. After all, the species has been around far longer than people—more than 280 million years, by some estimates. Now that’s an old bug! STRATEGY PRACTICE SKILL PRACTICE List at least two traits of cockroaches. For each trait, draw a picture that shows what you visualized. Read each question. Fill in the bubble next to the correct answer. 1. What main idea is supported by the fact that a cockroach can survive without its head? A Cockroaches are fast-moving. 3. Which of these tells one way that cockroaches and humans are different? A Cockroaches can move faster. B Cockroaches are tough. B Cockroaches have longer lives. C Cockroaches are common pests. C Cockroaches need food and water. D Cockroaches are smart. D Cockroaches have existed longer as a species. 2. The passage compares a baby cockroach to . a dime to show A the speed of baby cockroaches 4. Why do cockroaches flatten themselves?
