b) Locations and Rationale of Selection
The study will include three locations;
1. My Living Room: Currently I live in Southern Vancouver near Surrey. My living room
serves as the center of my dwelling. My living room has different purposes, it is where I
work, relax, and connect with the environment. The living room has large windows that
face East. These windows provide an outstanding view of the sunrise and the North Shore
Mountains can be viewed from here. From these windows, I observe the daily
occurrences in the neighborhood. I can observe the morning traffic and the evening lights
from nearby residences. The living room is my personal area for meditation, comfort, and
contemplation. The importance of the living room is derived from its personal and
intimate nature in my life. I usually begin and end my day here.
2. Neighborhood, Riverfront Park-located along the Fraser River: Besides being a key
neighborhood feature, Riverfront Park is my first escape from urban life and allows
connection with nature. Riverfront Park has different features, like; river views, green
spaces, and walking trails which attract visitors. I often go to Riverfront Park for a run or
walk, or even enjoy the fresh air and the view of the Fraser River and the boats.
Riverfront Park provides the locals with a connection Fraser River-a major ecological and
historical heritage. Riverfront Park provides a gathering place for all people irrespective
of age or gender. Therefore, it gives them a sense of belonging and community.

Riverfront Park is an essential location because it offers a connection to the larger
surroundings, nature, and community.
3. Metro Vancouver Location: Queen Elizabeth Park: Located at a short drive in
metropolitan Vancouver, Queen Elizabeth Park, is a significant green space. At Queen
Elizabeth Park, one can see the all-around views of the city’s skyline, surroundings, and a
wider catch of the North Shore mountains. Queen Elizabeth Park has different attractions,
such as gardens, a conservatory, and recreational areas. The park reflects the commitment
of Vancouver City to the provision of public amenities and green spaces. The park allows
one to enjoy the city’s beauty and geographical landscape.
b) Geographical Concepts
For my living room, I will use geographical concepts of Place and Location. In this case,
the place concept enables one to understand the personal and emotional connections with a
physical space. Place defines one’s experiences, memories, and daily routines. Location defines
site which includes the physical characteristics, orientation, and proximity to other rooms. For
the River Front Park, I will use concepts such as distance (relative distance), and distribution
(clustered). In this case, relative distance will define the time needed to reach the park from my
residence while distribution will define how people spread in the park, some areas are usually
clustered than others-for instance near playgrounds and benches with iconic views. For the case
of Queen Elizabeth Park, my main concept will be region (vernacular) which defines the shared
concept and understanding of the importance of recitational and aesthetic characteristics of
metropolitan Vancouver. The other concept will be space (relative space), which defines the size
of the part relative to the entire area, elevation, and views that it provides.

In this paper, I intend to use observation notes since they have more connection with personal
understanding.

The following will be the outline of the paper;
1. Introduction: This will cover an overview, purpose, locations, geographical concepts and
the thesis statement.
2. Analysis of each location: Including their respective geographical concepts.

b) ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
Jakubiec, J. A., Rodriguez, E., Li, A., Peters, T., & Kesik, T. (2023, September). Human-centric
lighting assessment of balcony design. In Building Simulation 2023 (Vol. 18, pp. 18031810). IBPSA.
Jakubiec et al. (2023) investigated human-centric lighting assessment for designs with
balconies. The study used four human-centric lighting metrics; residential daylight, view
quality, circadian health potential and balcony gardening. The researchers used 31,034
apartment simulations in Vancouver. The researchers perceived that balcony gardening is
an essential metric for apartment design and depends on the global horizontal irradiance

that reaches the balcony. The findings indicated a high acceptance of standard design
criteria with typical minimum performance and high-quality daylight. These results were
supported by the medium and 3rd quartile results. The results indicated a correlation
between the 12 design parameters and the 4 metrics that supported intuitive design
decisions in cases where simulations are impossible.
Mikkelsen, D. R. (2000). The North Fraser River greenway: using greenway design as a tool for
industrial retention, environmental restoration, and public integration along a working
waterway (Doctoral dissertation, University of British Columbia).
Mikkelsen (2000), sought to investigate how greenway designs can be used in industrial
and environmental restorations, and public integration along the Northern Fraser River. In
this case, the author acknowledges the significance of the running waterway to the
residence in the view of revenue generation, economic sustainability, land use,
environmental, and transport utilities. The researcher argued that sustaining the urban
resource-based industry along the river is not only desirable but essential. The study
illustrated that major greenway benefits would be achieved through effective
management of riverfront parks along the Fraser River. Such benefits include industrial,
cultural, educational, economic, and ecological sustainability.
Takyi, S. (2016). Building evidence-based research for park development and design in
Canadian cities: cases from the City of Vancouver parks (Doctoral dissertation,
University of Northern British Columbia).
Takyi (2016), conducted evidence-based research on the park design and developments in
Canadian cities. In this research, the researcher acknowledges the importance of urban

parks in promoting environmental, social, economic, and well-being factors in urban
centers. The study conducted interviews with stakeholders and reviewed secondary data
from newspapers, documents, and archived records from Vancouver. The study also used
historical analysis of the Queen Elizabeth and Stanley parks. The results indicated that
there is a need to embrace a more effective contemporary approach to managing the city
parks rather than using the traditional public for-profit model. The study suggested that a
hybrid model would have more efficiency because it caters for the relationship between
the ecological, economic, and social benefits and other factors such as demographic
properties and park uses.
