Introduction Background of the Study This study will examine the selling practices of sari-sari stores in Bagontaas. Small, family-run stores are really important to their neighborhoods. They're convenient, the owners know their customers, and they're part of the community. Even though they don't have a lot of money or resources, these stores have found clever ways to be successful. This study will look at how they do it. Research in Makiling City found that successful sari-sari stores prioritized strong customer service, relationship building, and convenient access Alusen (2024). Similar findings emerged from a study in Dapitan City, where both owners and customers confirmed the importance of personalized service and convenient location Pagara (2020). Domingo (2020) He found in his research that while location significantly impacts sales, sari-sari store owners in Matnog, Philippines, face numerous challenges including unpredictable income and limited resources, highlighting the need for improved business management and external support for long-term success. The consistent findings from studies in Makiling, Matnog, and Dapitan Cities strongly suggest that the success of sari-sari stores is not solely dependent on pricing or product selection but is significantly influenced by their ability to foster strong customer relationships and offer convenient services tailored to their local communities. This people and process approach appears to be a key factor contributing to their resilience and sustainability. Further research could explore how these strategies adapt across different geographic locations and socio-economic contexts. While existing research highlights the importance of customer relationships and convenient service in the success of Philippine sari-sari stores, it lacks understanding of how these strategies adapt to the specific contexts of smaller, less-studied communities. Previous studies of Alusen and Pagara focused on larger urban area, potentially overlooking the unique challenges and strategies employed in smaller, more rural communities. While owner perspectives are valuable, a thorough understanding requires incorporating the experiences and perceptions of sari-sari store customers. Therefore, this research will address the identified gaps by focusing on Bagontaas, employing a mixed-methods approach, and incorporating both owner and customer viewpoints to provide a more complete understanding of sari-sari store success. This research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the selling strategies employed by sari-sari stores in Bagontaas, focusing on the interplay between community context, customer relationships, and business success. This study will use a mix of interviews and surveys to collect data about the selling practices of sari-sari stores in Bagontaas. The paper will be organized into the following sections: Introduction, Literature Review, and Methodology. The research findings can inform national-level policies related to supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the Philippines. Policymakers can use the data to design more effective programs and regulations that address the specific challenges faced by sari-sari stores and other similar businesses. This research provides actionable insights into effective selling practices, enabling owners to improve their inventory management, pricing strategies, customer service, and marketing efforts, ultimately leading to increased profitability and business sustainability. They can use the findings to directly implement changes in their daily operations. The research can inform investors and entrepreneurial ventures in the Bagontaas area. Understanding the local market dynamics and the potential of sari-sari stores can attract investment and stimulate economic growth. The study will contribute to the existing knowledge on small business management, marketing, and community development. The focus on a specific community context will provide a valuable case study for future researcher. Review of Related Literature This review examines existing literature relevant to the research questions, employing a structured approach to analyze theoretical frameworks and empirical findings related to sari-sari stores in Bagontaas. The review is organized into four main sections: a discussion of relevant theoretical frameworks, and examinations of the literature related to each research question, followed by a synthesis. Social Network Theory Social network theory posits that the structure and strength of social relationships significantly influence individual and group behavior, resource access, and overall outcomes Granovetter (2023). This theory studies how people and groups connect. It looks at the types of connections close relationships versus more casual ones and how things like information and help move through these connections. Close relationships offer a sense of belonging and trust, making it easier to get support and resources. More distant connections, while not as strong, can link people to different groups, opening doors to new information and possibilities. The number and importance of a person's connections affect how easily they can get things and overcome problems. Therefore, social network theory highlights the importance of social capital, the resources and benefits derived from social relationships in shaping individual and collective outcomes. This framework is particularly relevant for understanding the operations of sari-sari stores, which are deeply embedded within their local communities. Social network theory is chosen because it is a good way to understand why some sarisari stores in Bagontaas do well and others don't. It helps us see how things like the store's relationships with others in the community affect its success. Sari-sari stores are not just individual businesses, they're deeply connected to their communities. How well they do depends a lot on their relationships with customers, suppliers, and other businesses and people in the area. Social network theory helps us study these relationships, see how resources and information move around, and understand how the connections between the store and others affect its success and ability to last. It shows us how having strong connections helps sari-sari stores get what they need to thrive. Using this theory, we can look beyond just the money side of sari-sari stores and see how important their relationships are. This broader view gives us a much better understanding of these important community businesses. Sari-sari Store Owners Approaches to Selling Goods Sari-sari stores in Bagontaas thrive by building strong customer relationships. They offer personalized service, flexible payment plans, and are active community members. This close connection, including selling small amounts or “tingi” and offering credit or “utang”, creates loyal customers and ensures they sell what the community needs. Bautista (2018) This study highlights the vital role of sari-sari stores in the Philippine economy, emphasizing their community-based retailing model, which often includes practices like tingi and utang, contributing to employment, social interaction, and economic access. Cruz (2015) This study shows how sari-sari stores are vital to Philippine urban communities, providing goods, jobs, and social connections despite facing economic challenges. Their friendly and flexible ways of doing business help them succeed, but they also face some special problems that we'll look at more closely. Factors Sari-sari store Owners Identify as Key to Staying in Business The success of Bagontaas' sari-sari stores hinges on strong customer relationships, careful resource management, and the ability to adapt to changing market demands. This involves providing excellent customer service, sometimes extending credit, and strategically managing inventory and finances. Cruz (2019) identifies key success factors for sari-sari store owners through field insights, highlighting the importance of effective management practices, customer relationships, and strategic product offerings in achieving business sustainability and growth. Baker and Saren's (2016) research demonstrates that personalized service and credit extensions are key customer relationship management strategies for small businesses, leading to increased loyalty and improved performance. Gonzales (2020) investigates the challenges and opportunities faced by sari-sari stores in the Philippines, emphasizing how these factors impact their sustainability and growth within the local economy. While financial management is crucial, the success of sari-sari stores hinges on more than just economic efficiency. The cultivation of strong social relationships and the ability to adapt to local market dynamics are equally important for long-term viability. The following section will examine the challenges that threaten this viability. Challenges Sari-sari Store Owners Face in Running their Stores Sari-sari store owners in Bagontaas face significant challenges, including intense competition from larger retailers, limited access to formal financial services, and economic vulnerabilities. Sari-sari stores often struggle to compete with bigger stores that have lower prices and more products. It's also hard for them to get loans, making it difficult to grow their businesses. Plus, when the economy is bad, they make less money. Santos (2019) conducts a qualitative study on the challenges faced by sari-sari store owners in urban communities, revealing issues such as competition, limited access to resources, and regulatory hurdles that hinder their business operations and growth. Aldaba's (2018) study analyzes the challenges faced by small Filipino retailers due to increasing competition from supermarkets, emphasizing the need for adaptation to survive in a changing market. Sari-sari stores face many interconnected problems. This shows that we need government help to support these important local businesses. What we've learned from this review will guide our next research step. This literature review examined sari-sari stores in Bagontaas, focusing on their selling practices, success factors, and challenges. Regarding selling practices, research consistently highlights personalized service, flexible credit or "utang", and community engagement as key elements, fostering customer loyalty but also presenting financial risks. Success factors identified include strong customer relationships, efficient resource management, and adaptability to local demands however, the relative importance of these factors may vary contextually. Significant challenges include competition from larger retailers, limited access to finance, and economic vulnerabilities, underscoring the need for supportive policies and initiatives. Overall, the literature reveals a complex interplay of economic, social, and community factors shaping the success and sustainability of sari-sari stores, emphasizing their resilience and adaptability while highlighting the need for interventions to address persistent challenges.
