9-STE LAVOISIER
Broad Topic: Grasshopper (Caelifera) as an alternative wound dressing.
Preliminary research:
Chitosan were isolated from nymphs and adults of a grasshopper (Erdogan & Kaya,
2016), Chitosan a natural polymer derived from chitin, is gaining attention as a
promising material for wound dressings due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and
antimicrobial properties, which can enhance wound healing and prevent infection.
Chitosan was extracted through deproteination, demineralization, and deacetylation
process.
Define:
The researcher will investigate the effectiveness of Grasshopper chitosan as an
alternative wound dressing.
Refine:
The research will capture a grasshopper using fine-mesh net, a container with a lid, or a
sheet/shirt to catch them after they jump, or set a molasses trap. Chitosan will be
extracted from the grasshopper using deproteination, demineralization, and deacetylation
process (Gels 2022). The researcher will conduct a deproteination, demineralization, and
deacetylation process at Tarlac State University if the chitosan in grasshopper can be used
as Wound dressing.
