Combines in-demand technical computer skills w practical business knowledge to
solve unique business issues
NOT computer programming or computer harware & electronics or complex
computer networking
1) Explain why the Introduction to Management Information Systems course is
the most important one at JMSB.
• Ratio of price to performance has significantly  which result in the costs
related to data & storage become negligible (ig, uber, apple pay…) This
mark the beginning of Information Age, led by these technologies causing
a potential for business application w the development of new
technology. It’s necessary to have the capability of evaluating, analyzing &
applying new technologies to get favorable results.
• In result, new technologies became available
2) Define Management Information Systems.
• Carrying out an activity = a process, in a running business= business
processes
• Information system= a set of component, mostly a computer. These
components are used to store data, retrieve data and produce
information
• Often, 1 or + info system is needed for the completion of a process
• Information is the use of data resulting in the provision of knowledge &
empowerment of employees to perform their duties
•
•
Designing, monitoring and adapting processes, information systems and
information; MIS involves managing the 3 well
Includes: security, backup and recovery preparations for system
downtimes are tasks and obligations and responsabilities
3) Describe how Management Information Systems relate to organizational
strategy.
• The organization’s strategy requires processes, information systems and
information
• In MIS, it includes data protection: MIS meet business demands w
information systems to achieve organizational strategy
• Must meet a business ‘’need’’
• To survive and thrive, the organization must create a competitive strategy
that is a P/S that the organization’s customer place a better value on it
instead of similar offers of competitor
4) List the five forces to determine industry structure.
Competitive FORCES
1. Competition from substitutes
2. Competition from new entrants
3. Competition from existing rivals
Bargaining Power Forces
4. Bargaining power of suppliers
5. Bargaining power of customers
 Business processes and information systems depend on the organization
competitive strategy which shapes the company processes & complexity
 Value chain activities (production, customer service, logistics…) help business
to run efficiently by supporting & improving corporate process (decisionmaking, strategic planning & operations) which result in value chain activities,
corporate processes and information system to be all connected
Porter’s 4 competitive startegies for corporations
1. Broad Cost Leadership: compete by selling at reduced price ex: Walmart
2. Broad Differentiation: ex: Tesla w unusual cars
3. Industry Wide strategy
4. Focused Strategy
5) Explain how competitive strategy determines value chain structure.
 The company’s CS defines how it seeks to gain an advantage in the
market, a strategy that will influence the value chain structure
• Value chain analysis: process of analyzing the organization’s primary and
support activities to determine where value is added to P/S and what are
the cost of doing so
• Value chain linkage defines interaction across the value chain activities:
ACT 1: Primary Activity
ACT 2: must match the competitive strategy
ACT 3: Support Activities
6) Explain how competitive strategy determines business processes and information
systems.
