Literature involves the reading
and analysis of written
materials of different kinds.
Literature consists of those writings
which interpret the meanings of nature
and life, in words of charm and power,
touched with the personality of the
author, in artistic forms of permanent
interest.
- Henry Van Dyke
Literature is an oral or written
reproduction of human experiences
expressed artistically either in prose
or in poetry.
Why study Literature?
According to Shimmer Chinodya, 1992
01
It improves our command of language.
02
It teaches us about the life, culture, and
experiences of people.
03
It entertains us and provides useful
occupation of our time.
04
It makes you a wiser and more
experienced person by forcing you to
judge, sympathize with, or criticize the
characters you read about.

Formalism may be defined as a critical approach in which the
text under discussion is considered primarily as a structure of
words.
Structuralism analyzed material by examining underlying
structures and attempted to show how these patterns were
universal and could thus be used to develop general
conclusions about both individual works and the systems from
which they emerged.
