Artificial Intelligence is a method of making a computer, a computer-controlled robot, or a software think intelligently like the human mind. AI is accomplished by studying the patterns of the human brain and by analyzing the cognitive process. The outcome of these studies develops intelligent software and systems. Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and act like humans. It involves the development of algorithms and computer programs that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation. AI has the potential to revolutionize many industries and has a wide range of applications, from virtual personal assistants to self-driving cars. Before forwarding to the meaning of artificial intelligence let us understand what the meaning of Intelligence isIntelligence: The ability to learn and solve problems. This definition is taken from webster’s Dictionary. The most common answer that one expects is “to make computers intelligent so that they can act intelligently!”, but the question is how much intelligent? And How can one judge intelligence? as intelligent as humans. If the computers can solve the real-world problems, by improving on their own from past experiences, they would be called “intelligent”. Thus, the AI systems are more generic (rather than specific), can “think” and are more flexible. Intelligence, as we know, is the ability to acquire and apply knowledge. Knowledge is the information acquired through experience. Experience is the knowledge gained through exposure(training). Summing the terms up, we get artificial intelligence as the “copy of something natural (i.e., human beings) ‘WHO’ is capable of acquiring and applying the information it has gained through exposure.” HOW AI IS EMERGING IN EDUCATION INDUSTRTY? DUOLINGO Duolingo, a popular language learning platform that uses artificial intelligence to enhance its Language Courses and offer personalized Learning Experience for Users is employing Artificial Intelligence in several ways. Here is how Duolingo's using AI: Adaptive Learning: Adaptive learning strategy is a training approach which adapts educational experiences for each individual student based on their progress, competences, limitations and preferences. To give you a personal experience of learning, Duolingo uses artificial intelligence algorithms. Before being able to use this platform, users will have to take a first placement test in order to be qualified for the target language. The AI will determine the optimal starting position for each user on the basis of its results. For the purpose of personalised learning experience, Duolingo uses artificial intelligence algorithms. Before users can use this platform, they must have passed a placement test in order to be able to understand the target language. The AI establishes an optimal starting point for each user according to the results. The AI analyses students' progress in class and makes adjustments to the level of difficulty. This is intended to ensure that users are stimulated at the correct level, thereby maximising their ability to learn. Personalized Feedback: Users can receive immediate and custom feedback on their replies from Duolingo's AI. It takes into account the accuracy of answers and gives reasons for errors. This feedback is intended to help users understand the mistakes they have made, as well as what can be improved in future. Duolingo's AI will provide immediate feedback as soon as an error has been identified to explain why a user's response was wrong. Examples such as grammatical errors, inappropriate use of words and others related to language issues are also listed. Spaced Repetition: Space repetition is a method of teaching that enhances retention by continuing to reacquaint yourself with knowledge over an extended period of time. In order to determine when and how often users should learn a specific word or topic, Duolingo's artificial intelligence algorithm uses repeated repetition algorithms. This will allow users to enhance their learning and retain knowledge more effectively. The aim of repetition intervals is to improve memory retention by looking at the information soon after it has been deleted, so as to reinforce memories and increase the likelihood that data will be retained for a long time. Duolingo deliberately restricts the time it takes to repeat information you have already learned in order to improve language acquisition. Sentence and Speech Recognition: Duolingo uses artificial intelligence, based upon voice recognition technology, to assess user pronunciation and speaking skills. In this option users are given the opportunity to practise speaking in their target language, while being evaluated for pronunciation accuracy. The ability of Duolingo to assess and analyse the words submitted by users is called phrase recognition. In projects requiring students to transpose sentences from the target language into their respective languages, this ability is used on a regular basis. By comparing the translation with the expected reply recorded in its database, the system will assess whether or not it is correct. Language recognition in Duolingo's means that the platform is capable of analysing and evaluating language. This ability is frequently used in the practice of improving a student's English pronunciation, speaking skills and reading comprehension. Crowdsourced Translations: Real world content on the Internet is included in Duolingo's lessons, so that users can help their translation as they study. The AI makes it easier and more fun for students to pick out the hardest sentences they're supposed to be translating. In Duolingo's classes, real world online content which the students can help translate during their study is included. The AI will help to improve the efficiency and enjoyment of translation for students by being able to find out which sentences are hardest to translate. Duolingo typically starts with developing the basic version, in collaboration with a team of language teachers and linguistics experts, when it decides to launch a new language learning course. Data-Driven Improvements: In Duolingo's AI, huge amounts of data are collected from user interaction and learning patterns. The patterns, users' preferences and opportunities for development of the course are assessed against this data. Improvements and adaptations in learning experience are made using the findings of this study. Duolingo collects interactions between users and the service, e.g., how much time are they spending on classes, exercise experiments, correct answers to questions or completion rates. Such data provides an insight into the user engagement and is used to identify areas in which consumers may be struggling or losing interest. In general, Duolingo's Data-Driven Methods enable them to continuously improve their platform and align it with the Learning Objectives of their users in a way that will be more efficient, entertaining or engaging. Course Creation and Optimization: Duolingo's Artificial Intelligence also provides a platform for the development of new language courses. It facilitates the automatic creation of courses based on existing material and learning objectives by means of an optimisation process. This provides Duolingo with the opportunity to expand its offering and offer courses in less commonly taught languages. Contributions wishing to make a course for specific language pairs may apply. Contributors draw up the structure of a skill tree and choose from which skills will be acquired in accordance with learners' progress. Contributors are working together to carry out an evaluation and improvement of the course material. The course is tested and feedback provided by a group of people known as beta testers for the purpose of detecting and resolving problems. User Engagement: Duolingo uses a gamification element in order to retain the users' interest. The AI may create special courses, challenges and incentives according to the user's achievements or decisions which make learning a more interesting experience. User behaviour patterns such as time of day when a user has the highest level of engagement and device used shall also be taken into consideration by Duolingo's Adaptive Learning Strategy. In order to improve the effectiveness of learning, this information may be used for changing when and how knowledge is delivered. Duolingo's AI can encourage users to participate, enabling them to be more competitive with colleagues, joining language groups and participating in the challenges. These social features promote a sense of community and positive competition, encouraging people to take part. REVENUE MODEL: Time based subscriptions, in app advertising, and Duolingo test are the three primary revenues -generating model for Duolingo. Time-based subscriptions: Duolingo provides annual, six-month, and monthly plans. Users have the option of purchasing a single plan or a family package that covers up to six users. When a user pays a subscription, Duolingo logs the payment as delayed income. A liability account known as "deferred revenue" indicates money that has been earned but has not yet been received. A percentage of the deferred money is converted into revenue by Duolingo during the duration of the subscription period. In-app advertisements: To display advertisements in its app, Duolingo works with advertising networks in partnership. Duolingo logs income each time an advertisement is displayed. Duolingo English Test: English proficiency testing with Duolingo is available for both academic and professional settings. Duolingo tracks the fee as deferred income when a user buys the Duolingo English Test. Within 48 hours of the exam's completion and upload, a decision regarding certification is made. The test is proctored. The delayed income is recognized by Duolingo as revenue once the test has been proctored and a certification decision has been reached. Following is Statement of Incomes and expenditure of Duolingo for the quarter ending on 30th June 2023 and 30th June 2022. With approximately one-third of the world's test takers hailing from the sub-continent, India has emerged as one of the biggest markets for Duolingo's English (aptitude) test (DET) for international college admissions. Jennifer Dewar, Senior Director of Strategic Engagement for DET, claims that the figure is still rising. Incidentally, the second-largest source of students for universities in English-speaking nations is India. India recently surpassed China in terms of test participation on Duolingo. In 2022, more than 1,200 cities and towns had participants who took the DET; this is an increase of about 80% from the corresponding period in the previous year. The top 10 largest cities in the nation currently make up 76% of the total number of tests offered by Duolingo. In 2022, the company experienced a year-on-year increase of more than 100% in cities such as Kochi, Nellore, Bharuch, Malappuram, and Eluru, among others. Using digital media to advertise its hallmark 'DET tests at home,' which come at a far reduced cost (of roughly $50 each test) than other rival international examination companies, has aided the company. Pandemic-caused disruptions were an added benefit that pushed Duolingo's testing through the usage of digital medium strategy even farther. According to the World Bank, urbanization accounts for 35% of India's population (approximately 480 million people). This means that there is only one testing centre for every 6.6 million people in a metropolis, and that around 900 million people would have to travel to urban regions to see a testing centre, according to the company's research. Duolingo did a global study on the availability of Secure English Language Test (SELT) centres in 2022 and discovered that there are 73 SELT centres in India, all of which are located in cities. AI's impact isn't limited by physical boundaries; it extends access to education in remote or underserved areas through online platforms. These platforms allow students who might otherwise lack access to quality education to reach resources and instruction, transcending geographical constraints and promoting inclusivity. For educators, AI provides valuable insights into student performance and learning patterns. With this information, teachers can adjust their instruction to cater to individual needs, ensuring that every student receives the necessary support to succeed. Additionally, AI aids in resource allocation, enabling educational institutions to optimize budgets and distribute resources effectively based on student needs and performance data. The influence of AI isn't confined to traditional classrooms; it extends to adult learners seeking to enhance their skills or explore new subjects. AI-driven platforms make lifelong learning opportunities more accessible, allowing individuals to engage in continuous education and personal growth. However, while the benefits of AI in education are substantial, addressing certain challenges is crucial. Data privacy and security become paramount as educational institutions handle sensitive student information. Ensuring robust data protection measures and compliance with privacy regulations is essential to maintain trust and safeguard student data. Ethical considerations also come to the forefront. AI systems can inadvertently perpetuate biases, leading to discriminatory outcomes. Addressing bias and ensuring fairness in AI decision-making is a critical aspect of ethical implementation. Developers and educators must collaborate to create AI systems that promote inclusivity and equity. In conclusion, the outcomes of incorporating AI in the education sector are diverse and farreaching. From personalized learning experiences and adaptive tutoring systems to intelligent virtual assistants and streamlined administrative tasks, AI enriches the educational journey for both students and educators. However, these outcomes come with the responsibility to address challenges such as data privacy, ethical considerations, and the preservation of teacher-student interactions. Through thoughtful implementation, collaboration, and a focus on ethics, AI has the potential to reshape education, providing more effective, engaging, and accessible learning experiences for students from various backgrounds.
