INTRODUCTION
In this report we are highlighting the work we have done while designing
and simulating a network with GNS3 and monitoring it by PRTG and
CACTI.
This report is about two main parts:
The First part is creation of Virtual machine and running Windows
Server on it and then install PRTG on that Windows Server.
The second part is about designing a ip network in GNSS3 and
configuring SNMP on all agents.
Part 1: Virtualization using Oracle VM
We started by the first part which was about creation of Virtual machine
with Oracle Virtual Box called SERVER PRTG, then we installed
Windows server on that VM. It is shown step by step on figures below
1) Creation a virtual machine under Oracle Virtual box

Starting Oracle Virtual Box virtual machine with allocated virtual RAM
of 1GB and virtual STORAGE of 50GB.
2) install Windows server (2008 or 2012), then install PRTG in one VM
We installed Windows server 2012 R2 for hosting our monitoring
program PRTG.

This is the Windows Server dashboard. All services are working
very well.

As shown in the previous figure, we installed PRTG successfully
on the windows server
The figure above shows PRTG dashboard when it is launched in Firefox
browser: running on 127.0.0.1:8080
Part 2: Network node creation and interconnection of the
monitoring platform to manage the network nodes

In this figure we are importing the server created previously in
VirtulaBox VM called SERVEUR PRTG which will be our SNMP
manager SERVER
Let start the devices and see configuration in each router

Devices are starting. Note that when we are launching devices, GNS3
starts automatically our Virtual machine with Windows SERVER
This is the figure where all Network is on. Let now look into devices and
show configurations.

2) Assign addresses on the interfaces according to the topology
addressing plan
3) Interconnected all the routers of the architecture using a dynamic
routing protocol (RIP V2, or OSPF)
7) Configure the SMTP protocol on all the equipment in the architecture
A. ROUTERS
To design routers topology, we used cisco router c291 template for its
low memory consuming (192MB) in comparison of others router
templates.
Let look now for configurations in all routers.

As you can see in R1 has been assigned correct ip address as given on
the above topology, also the rip routing protocol has been setup on the
router and SNMP is enabled.
We did the same on others router (respecting ip addresses in each
network) as shown in the following figures R2 as SITE 1, R3 as SITE 2
and R4 as SITE 3

After doing that let show assigned ip on the server and let make ping
operations to show that everything worked very well
5) Add and interconnect the server to the infrastructure
We can see that our server has been assigned right ip address and it is
connected to the network. Let prove it by running ping to different
routers

This image is the proof that the server is connected to the network and all
router are connected too via rip router protocol as server can ping all
networks on the topology.
6) Activate the SMTP protocol on the server
This figures show how we activated SNMP protocol on the server.

8) With PRTG « Run an autodiscovery » to catch automatically all
nodes.
9) Create the sensors and add the equipment to PRTG

This is how to run auto discovery in PRTG. The monitoring software
will search in a particular network all nodes here we showed by using
192.168.10 network

Auto discovery in progress
We did the same for all other networks of our infrastructure and here the
results we found:
Network 192.168.10 (CENTRE DE SURVEILLANCE) R1 and Server
PRTG
We can see that our server WIN-SAAGHK02SS2 is interconnected in
the network after running auto discovery

Here we can see different sensors of R3 node and each sensor is to monitor an
special feature of the router such as CPU, PING, traffic at each interface of the
node as shown in the following image

We faced this issue while installing CACTi, its delayed and it didn’t
install
