And Women’s Empowerment
School: Bahria Town School and College
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) acknowledges the significant influence of media in
shaping perceptions of gender roles and women’s empowerment worldwide. As a country that
upholds traditional values, Saudi Arabia is keenly aware of the power media has to either
reinforce or challenge gender stereotypes. While significant progress has been made in
improving women’s rights and their representation in the media, cultural and religious
considerations remain at the forefront of the nation’s policies. Saudi Arabia is committed to
addressing gender equality within the frameworks of both Islamic values and contemporary
advancements in society.
Despite the progress made in recent years, Saudi Arabia still faces significant challenges
regarding gender stereotypes in the media. Media often reflects traditional views that limit
women to specific, predefined roles and underrepresents their diversity and contributions to
society. These narrow portrayals not only hinder women’s empowerment but also reinforce
outdated perceptions of gender roles, which can stifle societal growth and limit opportunities for
women. Furthermore, the rapid rise of social media and global entertainment platforms has
resulted in the spread of both positive and negative images of women. While some portrayals
empower and inspire, others perpetuate harmful stereotypes and create confusion regarding
women’s roles in society. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recognizes the importance of addressing
these challenges in a way that is mindful of its cultural and religious values. These values
continue to shape public discourse on gender issues, making it crucial for the Kingdom to find a
balance between cultural traditions and the evolving global media landscape in order to ensure
that women's empowerment is advanced without undermining the nation's identity.
To address these challenges, Saudi Arabia advocates for enhanced and more accurate
representation of women in the media, particularly in leadership and professional roles. The
Kingdom supports media literacy programs aimed at helping the public identify and challenge
harmful gender stereotypes. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia encourages local media productions that
are true to their cultural values while meeting global standards of gender equality. Kingdom of
Saudi Arabia believes that by building partnerships among governments, media organizations,
and civil society, an empowering environment for women will be created while still holding on
to the cultural heritage.
