The characteristics of the Earth SUMMARY AND ACTIVITY The Earth is in the shape of a sphere. A sphere is a round solid object. There are three (3) main characteristics of the Earth, namely: Land: The main materials of land are rock, soil, and sand. Land on Earth consists of continents and islands. Continents are large pieces of land mass, and islands are a smaller land mass, surrounded by water. Water: Most of the Earth's surface is covered with water (about 71%). Water on Earth can be salty or fresh. Oceans and seas contain salt water, while rivers, ponds, and lakes contain fresh water. Air: Air is a mixture of gases that surrounds the Earth as a thin layer. Living things breathe in air to get oxygen. Activity 1. Memorandum 1. Explain each of the following concepts: 1.1 A sphere is a round solid object. 1.2 Continents are large pieces of land mass. 1.3 Islands are smaller land masses, surrounded by water. 2. Name and describe the main features of the Earth. Land Land consists of rock, soil, and sand and is divided into continents and islands. Water Earth is covered with about 71% water. Water on Earth can be classified as salty or fresh. Air There is a thin layer of air around the Earth and humans and animals breathe the air to get oxygen. 3.
