Key proponent: Howard Gardner
Howard Gardner is a
developmental psychologist
who suggested that people
can be intelligent in more
than one way.
8 MULTIPLE
INTELLIGENCES
Visual-Spatial Intelligence
People who are strong in visualspatial intelligence are good at
visualizing things. These
individuals are often good with
directions as well as maps,
charts, videos, and pictures.
Linguistic-verbal
People who are strong in linguisticverbal intelligence are able to use
words well, both when writing and
speaking. These individuals are
typically very good at writing stories,
memorizing information, and reading.
MATHEMATICAL-LOGICAL
Mathematical-logical intelligence is
the ability to think logically and
mathematically, and to use
numbers to solve problems. It also
involves the ability to think
abstractly.
BODY KINESTHETIC
This intelligence relates to the
ability to use whole or certain body
parts to create something, solve a
problem, or display skills involving
bodily bodily movement at an
event.
Musical
-People with enhanced musical
intelligence have a heightened ability to
hear, recognize, and remember patterns.
They think in music and cannot get it out
of their minds. In Frames of Mind, Gardner
indicated that musical intelligence
emerges earlier than other intelligences.
Interpersonal Intelligence
Interpersonal intelligence is the
capacity to understand the
intentions, motivations, and
desires of other people and,
consequently, to work
effectively with others.
Intrapersonal Intelligence
Intrapersonal intelligence is the
capacity to understand oneself, to
have an effective working model of
oneself, including one’s desires, fears,
and capacities—and to use such
information effectively in regulating
one’s own life.
Naturalist intelligence
Naturalist intelligence involves the
ability to recognize, categorize, and draw
upon patterns in the natural
environment. It includes sensitivity to the
flora, fauna, and phenomena in nature.
People with high naturalist intelligence
are good at classifying natural forms.
