A Note on Writing Essays
A 3-5 page APA formatted essay should have 3 main topics you
discuss in their own separate paragraphs
Each main topic is clearly identified in the opening paragraph
(Introduction), and then discussed later in the paper in the order they
are stated in the Introduction.
Each main topic paragraph should be at least 5-6 sentences long
(more if needed).
Under no circumstances should you ever have a paragraph that is only
1-3 sentences long!
Main topics are big ideas; an idea is not big if you only have 1-3
sentences to say about it
A Note on AI and Academic Integrity
From the Westcliff University Student Handbook section
“Academic Integrity Policy” (emphasis added): “The
University does not tolerate any form of academic
misconduct, such as cheating, fabrication, plagiarism,
and/or multiple submissions. Any student found committing
academic misconduct is subject to disciplinary action.”
Is it OK to use AI tools in preparing your submitted work?
Depends on how you use them/what you use them for
A Note on AI and Academic Integrity
Probably OK: Use of Grammarly to improve spelling,
punctuation, some sentence structure on work you have
already written prior to using the AI tool
Definitely NOT ALLOWED
Writing assignment in your native language then using AI LLM
tool such as Google Translate to convert to English for
submission: English is the required language for instruction
Using ChapGPT to produce body of paper, references, or any
significant portion of these: You must do your own work
A Note on AI and Academic Integrity
A few final comments
If you are not sure your intended use of AI tools is OK
then ask before you use them
AI-written papers have some obvious flaws that are
easily spotted when grading
Finally: If I were your boss and discovered you were
using AI to write your weekly reports to me, how long
would you continue to have a job?
Remember it is the SKILLS you get paid to practice, not
just having an academic degree
Strategic Writing I
Writing about strategy: Business and/or technical topics
Business communications of all kinds: Reports, memos,
summaries, presentations, emails, etc.
Proposals, reports, and presentations for government-funded
technology projects
Technical conference papers and presentations; peer-reviewed
journals
Technology popular press articles
Technical and legal correspondence with patent attorneys
Business plan and investment pitches; business reports and
disclosures
Both oral and written communication skills are vital
