Final Stage
Termination
Names: Mia Higgins, Samantha
Mulgrave, Tiffany Catterell
Background
• The psycho-educational group formed in Penbruke Lane is now coming to a close.
It was formed with 20 members and 3 facilitators, in hopes of reducing child abuse
and teaching positive forms of discipline. The group is about to reach its 10th and
final week, it has been able to maintain the same number of members and
facilitators since its formation. This presentation will display the necessary steps
being taken to properly terminate the group.
Termination/Final Stage
The adjourning stage, also known as the termination stage, is when
the group prepares to end. This stage can bring up feelings of loss and
sadness, but also accomplishment and hope. It is an opportunity for
members to reflect on their growth and to say their goodbyes.
The therapist’s role during this stage is to facilitate a healthy closure
process. This can involve encouraging members to express their
feelings about the group ending, discussing strategies for maintaining
the progress made in therapy, and celebrating the achievements of the
group.

LAYING GROUNDWORK FOR
TERMINATION
• Preparing clients for termination for the beginning of the session.
This can be achieved by outlining the timeframe for the session. Depicting that the
session is not forever, will help with focusing on helping the client to achieve their
desired goals.
• Set Goals that will help to mark the "finish line" for session.
Setting SMART goals that should be achieved. Creating goals give the session
direction and a clear vision of what the finish line should look like.
STEPS OF
TERMINATIO
N
Effective delivery techniques
• Make a prior notice
• Allow members to prep themselves for termination.
(Saying their goodbyes)
• Have a feedback session
• Reflection of what was learnt
• Make referral if necessary
CHALLENGES THAT MAY BE
ENCOUNTERED
CHALLENGES
•
Decrease in attendance- As the ending grows near
members may preempt it by not attending all
together or missing multiple meetings
•
Denial- Members sometimes forget that there will
be an end to the group.
•
Regression – As the end date of the group
approaches, members may start exhibiting
previously unlearned behaviour. This is done in
hopes of extending the group.
•
Similarly to regression members may start pushing
forward topics that they felt should have been
discussed.
Thank you
