A Comparison of Pre-Colonial and Modern
Science Education in Nursing in the
Philippines
Science education in the Philippines has greatly evolved from the pre-colonial era to the
modern age, particularly in the field of nursing. While early Filipinos relied on traditional
healing and hands-on learning, today’s nursing education is structured, research-based,
and technologically advanced. Despite these differences, both eras have contributed to
the development of healthcare and patient care in the country.
Before colonization, healthcare in the Philippines was deeply rooted in indigenous
knowledge. Albularyos (folk healers) played the role of early nurses, using herbal
medicine, hilot (massage therapy), and spiritual healing to treat illnesses. Midwives,
known as "hilots," assisted in childbirth, much like modern nurses in maternal and
newborn care. Though lacking formal education, their knowledge was passed down
through generations, ensuring the well-being of their communities.
Hygiene and disease prevention were also part of pre-colonial healthcare. Early
Filipinos practiced herbal bathing, wound care using medicinal plants, and communal
health rituals, which laid the foundation for modern infection control and patient care
principles. These practices show that even without formal nursing schools, early
Filipinos had a functional healthcare system based on observation and experience.
Today, nursing education is structured and standardized. Aspiring nurses undergo
extensive training in biology, anatomy, pharmacology, and evidence-based medicine.
Unlike pre-colonial healers who relied on experience, modern nurses follow scientific
methods, conduct research, and use advanced medical technology.
Moreover, nursing specialization is now possible, with areas such as critical care,
pediatrics, and community health nursing. This allows nurses to provide more targeted
and effective care, something that pre-colonial healers lacked due to the absence of
formal specialization.
However, some traditional healing methods, like the use of herbal medicine and
massage therapy, remain relevant today. Modern healthcare institutions even integrate
some indigenous practices into complementary and alternative medicine, showing a
blend of old and new nursing traditions.
Nursing education in the Philippines has progressed from traditional healing methods to
a formalized, science-based profession. While modern nursing relies on research,
technology, and structured learning, the foundation of care and compassion from
pre-colonial practices remains. By recognizing the strengths of both traditional and
modern nursing, Filipino healthcare continues to evolve, providing the best care for
future generations.
