common anti-thyroid
meds given for
hyperthyroidism?
When is PTU most
commonly used?
What does PTU do?
Side effects of PTU?
What to monitor with
PTU?
COOL CHICKEN→
What does Somatropin
do?
Hypothyroidism
Synthetic form of thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4)
Side effects only show if levels of med is too high→
mimics S/S of hyperthyroidism:
o anxiety, GI upset, sweating, weight loss, and heat
intolerance
TSH and T4 levels
Therapy is lifelong.
Overactive thyroid or hyperthyroidism, pregnancy, and
cardiac issues.
Give on empty stomach with full glass of water way
before other meds and breakfast.
Methimazole and Propylthiouracil (PTU)
Treatment of Grave’s disease or in preparation for a
thyroidectomy.
Blocks the synthesis of thyroid hormones, bringing
thyroid levels down.
Agranulocytosis (decrease in granulocytes→increase for
infection), hepatotoxicity, rash, and hypothyroidism.
CBC levels bc of agranulocytosis and liver function bc of
hepatotoxicity.
P T U – Prevents Thyroid levels from being Up too high
Mimics our naturally occurring growth hormone →
supports growth and production of proteins and decreases
use of glucose.
Used to address growth hormone deficiencies.
Side effects of
Somatropin?
Contraindications of
Somatropin?
Which routes can we
administer Somatropin?
What is Vasopressin?
Some side effects of
Vasopressin?
What to monitor with
Vasopressin?
COOL CHICKEN→
What are the common
Corticosteroids
(glucocorticoids)?
What do corticosteroids
do?
What are the important
side effects of
corticosteroids
(glucocorticoids)?
What do you monitor
when giving
corticosteroids?
Important pt teaching for
this med?
Hyperglycemia, renal calculi, pancreatitis.
Severe obesity, sleep apnea, or diabetes.
IM or SubQ
Mimics Antidiuretic Hormone → promotes reabsorption
of water in the kidneys; Decreases urine output and
increases urine osmolarity.
Also used to treat diabetes insipidus.
Overhydration or water intoxication; myocardial
ischemia.
I&O’s, urine specific gravity, electrolytes.
If given IV, monitor for infiltration of IV site → very
damaging to tissues and can cause gangrene.
Vasopressin helps to suppress urine.
-sone meds → Prednisone, Hydrocortisone,
Methylprednisolone, Dexamethasone.
Decrease inflammation and suppress the body’s immune
responses.
Bone loss, weight gain, fluid retention, hyperglycemia,
hypokalemia, and peptic ulcer disease, infection, and GI
upset.
S/s of infection since we are suppressing the immune
response; monitor for peptic ulcer disease (tarry stools,
coffee ground emesis).
Never abruptly stop taking med; Take Vit D & Calcium
supplements with this med; Do not take NSAIDs with
med.
