Ezekiel 38-39
Opening Question:
What are the big picture, highlevel observations from first
reading?
The Invasion (38:1-23)
 Gog, from the land of Magog—likely a
made-up figure who represents the
worst possible enemy. (1-2)
 The Lord is against Gog and his allies,
will bring them out for battle. (3-9)
 They will march on Israel, where the
Lord’s people dwell securely. (8-9)
 Gog is eager to attack & plunder an
unprotected land / people. (10-13)
The Invasion (38:1-23)
 The Lord will allow this, so that the
nations would know Him, so that His
holiness would be vindicated. (14-16)
 “Are you (Gog) the one I prophesied
that I would bring against Israel?” (17)

Answer (probably) : No. Could be referring
to Babylon.
 The Lord won’t allow Gog to harm
Israel. He will show His greatness and
bring down Gog in judgment. (18-23)
The Outcome (39:1-29)
 Again: the Lord is against Gog (1)
 His armies will fall and be food for the
birds and beasts; their lands will be
consumed by fire. (2-6)
 The Lord’s holy name will be known, no
longer profaned; nations will know that
He is the Holy One in Israel. (7-8)
The Outcome (39:1-29)
 The weapons of Gog’s army supply
firewood for 7 years; Israel plunders
those who plundered them. (9-10)
 It will take 7 months to cleanse the land
by burying all the slain. (11-16)
 God will host a sacrificial feast for the
birds and beasts; they will devour the
flesh & blood of Gog’s army. (17-20)
The Outcome (39:1-29)
 The Lord’s glory is on display. (21)

Israel will see and know…
The Lord is their God forever.

The nations will see and know…
The Lord punished Israel for her sins.
 Israel will forget their shame; they will
know that He is their God when He
pours out His Spirit on them. (25-29)
