One Required Textbook
Perrine's Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense, 13th edition, 2018,
ISBN 978-1-305-97103-5. This is a required book; you must buy it or
you CANNOT take the class.
Folio
I use only 2 elements on Folio, Announcements and Content. Check Folio
Announcements every MWF morning before class time because I will post
news, updates. And check Content for uploads, topics, handouts, sample
essays, etc.
Course Description/Outcomes
English 1102 is source-based writing (borrowing quotations from
sources) which will require weekly readings from Perrine's Literature.
The purpose of these readings is to build the analytical, rhetorical,
and interpretative skills that are necessary for academic success on
the college level. Most of the readings will be discussed in class.
Others you must read and analyze on your own. The purpose of this
class is to help you become mature, independent, self-motivating, selfediting readers and writers who can function successfully in an
academic setting.
Assignments
Because of the increased class size and lack of Newton Labs, this
course will involve a great deal of independent study. All of your
essays will be written outside of class, OOC for short, not in the lab
with me. After Week 1, Fridays are free lab days. That means we do
not meet. You may go to the lab on Fridays to work on your papers or
you may use your own computer. Your choice.
2
All essays must use borrowed quotations.
MLA Parenthetical Style
documentation is required on all papers. See a college composition
handbook or the Internet for details and examples. From Essays 1, 2,
and 3——your regular essays——I will drop your lowest grade.
The Research Paper and the Final Exam Essay cannot be dropped. The
Research Paper will count as 2 essay grades. The many specifics about
this term paper will come later in a detailed handout along with the
due date.
Essays are graded on a 0-25 point scale (described at the bottom of
this page) and then averaged at the end of the semester——basic math.
Academic Honesty
Any form of cheating or plagiarism will result in an automatic F in
the course. Then you will be suspended or expelled by the University's
lawyers. AI is plagiarism, period, and will be treated as cheating.
Attendance
I take the roll every MW class day. Remember, after Week 1, Friday is
an office hour day 8:00-2:30. You may miss a maximum of 5 class days.
More than that and you must withdraw from the class and retake it under
a different professor.
Any attendance problems will be reported
promptly in your Early Alert grades. No late papers are accepted, and
there is no makeup work or extra credit.
Grading
Essays will be graded using the following 0-25 point scale:
23-25 combined points = A
19-22 combined points = B
15-18 combined points = C
10-14 combined points = D
0-9
combined points = F
Essay ____ x 2 = ____
Sentences ____ x 2 = ____
Words ____ x 1 = ____
Your Combined Score ____
All of your writings must be double-spaced 2.0 with justified margins.
You must use only Courier New typeface, size 12 type——just like this
syllabus.
