South Perimeter Wall and Soil Improvements at Plant No. 2 Contract No. P2-128A CONFORMED MISCELLANEOUS METALWORK 05500-3 D. Miscellaneous stainless steel: 1. Provide miscellaneous stainless steel items not specified in this section as indicated on the Drawings or specified elsewhere. a. Fabricate and install in accordance with the best practices of the trade. 2. Perform post-fabrication (shop or field) surface treatment for stainless steel as follows: a. General Requirements: (1) Stainless steel sheet, plate and pipe are normally cleaned by the producer using acid pickling solutions or mechanical methods. Additional contamination of the metal is expected during the process of welding, fabrication, and installation of the equipment. Such contamination can degrade the corrosion-resistance of the affected areas. This section addresses the requirements for post-fabrication cleaning of stainless steel. It is intended for this procedure to be used by stainless steel fabricators; it is not intended to be used by primary producers of stainless steel mill products. (2) This practice is required for all surfaces in and around stainless-tostainless welds on the process side of the equipment and for all visible exterior welds. b. General Cleaning (1) General cleaning to remove dirt, oil, grease, fluxes, and other contaminants from fabrication shall be performed per ASTM A380. (2) Degreasing and general cleaning shall be accomplished by swabbing or spraying with alkaline, emulsion, solvent, or detergent cleaners, or a combination of these; by vapor degreasing by steam, with or without a cleaner; or by high pressure water-jetting. Use of carbon steel wire brushes for mechanical cleaning shall not be allowed. c. De-scaling and Removal of Heat Tint (1) De-scaling and heat tint removal shall be performed per ASTM A380 and the following requirements. (2) All weld heat tint shall be removed from welds and associated heataffected zones with pickling paste/spray product or abrasive blasting. (3) Pickling shall be in accordance with the product manufacturer’s instructions. The metal temperature during acid cleaning or pickling shall be at least 50 degrees F, but not above 105 degrees F. Pickling shall not be performed in direct sunlight. (4) When acid pickling is performed, care shall be taken to protect any carbon steel elements from contact with the pickling product. If carbon steel elements come into contact with the paste, they may be rejected and require replacement at the option of the ENGINEER, at no additional cost to OC SAN. (5) Disposal of acid pickling and any other residual or wastes shall meet all environmental regulations and shall be coordinated with the ENGINEER. MISCELLANEOUS METALWORK 05500-4 South Perimeter Wall and Soil Improvements at Plant No. 2 Contract No. P2-128A CONFORMED (6) The cost of collecting, managing and disposal of any cleaning wastewaters shall be included in the CONTRACTOR scope. The CONTRACTOR shall coordinate the Work with OC SAN’s safety and environmental compliance staff. d. Passivation Treatment (1) Passivation is the process of removing exogenous iron or iron compounds from the surface of a stainless steel. (2) Passivation treatments shall be performed per ASTM A380 and A967 and the following requirements. (3) Passivation shall be performed using a 4 to 10 weight percent citric acid solution (commercially available). The solution shall be continuously swabbed or sprayed on all previously cleaned weld and weld-affected surfaces for the following duration, per the solution manufacturer’s instructions and the procedures in ASTM A380 and A967: (a) At ambient temperature of ≥ 70 degrees F, for 20 minutes. (b) At ambient temperature between 40 and 70 degrees F, for 40 minutes. Rinse all surfaces contacted by the acid solution thoroughly for at least 2 minutes, using distilled water. Test surfaces for adequate passivation by spraying or swabbing with copper sulfate solution to continuously wet the surface for 6 minutes, per ASTM A967. If any iron is present, it will exhibit copper deposits with a pinkish tint (like a new penny), very distinct from the silver or gray stainless steel surface. Areas exhibiting copper deposits shall be repassivated, as above, but for only 20 minutes regardless of temperature. e. Improperly or poorly cleaned and passivated materials shall not be shipped and will not be accepted at the job site. E. Miscellaneous structural steel: 1. Provide miscellaneous steel items not specified in this section as indicated on the Drawings or specified elsewhere. a. Fabricate and install in accordance with the best practices of the trade. F. Isolating sleeves and washers: 1. As indicated on the Drawings and as specified in this section, protect dissimilar metals from galvanic corrosion by means of pressure tapes or isolators. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Verification of conditions: 1. Examine Work in place to verify that it is satisfactory to receive the Work of this section. 2. If unsatisfactory conditions exist, the CONTRACTOR shall not begin this Work until such conditions have been corrected. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Make provisions for erection loads with temporary bracing. Keep Work in alignment. South Perimeter Wall and Soil Improvements at Plant No. 2 Contract No. P2-128A CONFORMED MISCELLANEOUS METALWORK 05500-5 B. Interface between materials: a. Dissimilar metals: Where steel comes in contact with dissimilar metals (such as aluminum, stainless steel, etc.), separate or isolate the dissimilar metals. (1) Make application so that the isolating or protective barrier is not visible in the completed construction. (2) Protect dissimilar metals from galvanic corrosion by means of pressure tapes or isolating sleeves and washers. B. Catch basin frames and grating: 1. Installation: As specified in Section 02726, Precast Concrete Vaults. C. Stainless Steel: 1. Welding: a.
