Civil Engineering Department
CVE 263-01 Urban Transportation Planning
Homework #3
Due Date: Feb. 26, 2025
1. Given the utility equation:
Uk = ak – 0.007 X1 – 0.04 X2
Where X1 is the travel cost in cents and X2 is the travel time in minutes
a. Calculate the market shares of the following travel modes:
Mode K
Automobile
Express Bus
Metro
ak
-0.1
-0.38
-0.29
X1
100
50
75
X2
35
60
45
b. Estimate the effect that a 60% increase in the cost of all three modes will have
on modal split.
2.
Given the utility equation:
Uk = ak – 0.10 Ta – 0.05 TW – 0.025 Tr – 0.01 C
Where Ta is the access time, TW is the waiting time, Tr is the riding time, and C is
the out-of-pocket cost in cents. All times are in minutes.
a. Apply the MNL to calculate the shares of the Automobile and Bus
modes:
Mode K
Automobile
Bus
ak
-0.21
-0.32
Ta
5
12
Tw
0
10
Tr
20
40
C
120
75
b. Use the incremental Logit model to estimate the patronage (share) shift
that would result from increasing the bus out-of pocket cost by 60% and
increasing the out-of-pocket cost for the automobile by 80%.
3.
An estimation procedure for a mode choice model of the nested Logit structure,
found that UT=aT+ x Logsum with aT= -0.36 and =0.8. For a particular zonal
interchange, the following modal utilities were calculated in accordance with the
estimated nested Logit model: UA= -0.74, UB= -1.55, and UR= -1.30.
Calculate:
a. The corresponding mode shares
b. The effect of a policy that is expected to cause a change UB= -0.30
on the mode shares
