Reflection 1 Deciding on a career path was something that I found challenging. My younger self was greatly influenced by the people I met, or a television show I was watching. The career paths I had imagined for myself frequently changed. Some of the career paths that I felt I wanted to pursue, included being a fashion designer, Hollywood actress, or a crazy genius scientist. In high school, I felt especially lost; not knowing what I wanted to become was stressful because everyone around me was so certain in what they wanted to do in the future. I felt the pressure to decide on a career path in the summer entering my senior year of high school. The constant question, “What program are you doing next year?” that I heard from my family and friends was frightening. This soon changed for me when I started to volunteer at my local hospital, Humber River Hospital. My responsibilities as a volunteer on the in-patient floors were to restock hospital equipment such as masks, gloves, and gowns. Though these tasks were relatively straightforward the impact they carried was significant, changing both my perspective and life. This may sound dramatic and extreme, but without exposure to a hospital environment, I would not have been able to make up my mind. While I volunteered, a variety of hospital staff surrounded me, in particular nurses. During that time, I discovered that nurses were the backbone of the healthcare system. The lifesaving support they provide to patients is essential, and that is something that I knew I wanted to be a part of. When it was time to apply for university, I applied to every nursing (BScN) program in Toronto available to me, and when I got accepted to York University, I knew that this was the school I wanted to attend. Today, I can say that I am grateful that I made this decision. It has only been a week, but I love all my classes. Regarding Anatomy 1101, I am especially interested in learning about physiology, the study of the function of the body, because it is new to me. I know this will be helpful to my career as a nurse because I can develop skills to further understand the health conditions of patients and apply the necessary practices. In summary, nursing is a career path that I am truly passionate about, and Anatomy 1101 is a course that will certainly aid me in achieving this.
