How do sports and recreational activities impact
mental health and wellbeing? - Ved Shirekar
Introduction:
There are important benefits of sports and recreational activities, particularly
concerning the maintenance of mental wellbeing, because these activities help one
manage stress, enhance mood, and improve general health. While people are active,
they also release chemicals known as endorphins, which relieve pain and stress. Elite
sources report that people who undertake sports routinely will attain political wellness,
self-esteem, less anxious feelings, and diminished depression.
Causes and Consequences of a Sedentary Lifestyle:
Causes:
1. Injuries or disabilities: Some people may want to exercise, but because of
injuries or some sort of pain they can’t do it effectively.
2. Feeling tired: Sometimes work, family, or other things make it difficult to get
motivated for exercises.
3. Fear of failure or embarrassment: Some individuals tend to be bothered by a
fear of inadequacy or making a fool out of themselves while working out.
4. Mental health challenges: In denial of their mood disorders, individuals find it
difficult to get out of bed or pick a day’s activities.
5. Procrastination: Putting a time limit on such an event can be unreasonable, and
execution can be postponed to the actual exercise. with friends or family.
6. Busy schedule: It's difficult to find time for exercise when you have a lot going
on.
7. Lack of planning: Not scheduling exercise as a priority can make it easy to put
it off.
8. Procrastination: Putting off exercise until later can lead to never doing it.
Consequences:
1. Burning fewer calories: This increases your chances of gaining weight.
2. You may lose muscle strength and endurance because you are not working
your muscles as much.
3. Your bones may get weaker and lose certain minerals.
4. Your metabolism may be influenced, and your body may have more difficulty
breaking down fats and sweets.
5. Your immune system may not be working as well.
6. You could have lower blood circulation.
7. Your body may have greater inflammation.

Sports and recreation can significantly improve mental health. Physical activity helps
reduce anxiety, depression, and stress. These activities boost mood, self-esteem, and
social connection. Community-based sports foster mental resilience, teamwork, and
coping skills. Regular exercise can also enhance physical health, leading to a better
overall quality of life.
National Perspective:

Sports and recreation in India offer a positive impact on mental health. Physical
activity can counteract rising mental health disorders like stress and anxiety.
Government initiatives, like Fit India, encourage sports participation. Yoga, a popular
practice, reduces mental discomfort and increases mindfulness.
Local Perspective:
Based on multiple sources (all mentioned in citations)
Sports and recreation have become an integral part of life in Navi Mumbai, offering a
range of benefits for physical and mental health. Local initiatives have made these
activities more accessible to residents of all ages. From cricket and football to yoga
and meditation, there's something for everyone. These activities not only promote
physical fitness but also foster a sense of community, reduce stress, and boost selfesteem. The city's growing network of fitness centers and sports complexes has made
it easier for residents to incorporate exercise into their daily routines. By participating
in sports and recreation, Navi Mumbai citizens are actively contributing to their overall
well-being and creating a healthier, happier community.
Course of Action:
Promoting physical activity is essential for improving public health and well-being.
Making exercise accessible and appealing requires offering a variety of options that
cater to different interests and fitness levels, including community-based activities,
accessible facilities, and affordable choices. Creating a supportive environment at
work and highlighting the social benefits of physical activity can also increase
participation.
People can easily incorporate more physical activity into their routines, such as
walking or cycling for short trips or taking active breaks. Addressing barriers like time
constraints or safety concerns and supporting those with health conditions ensures
that everyone can benefit from regular exercise.

In this video, the speakers speak about some problems related to mental health and how
sports helped out. For instance, in this case the speakers explain, it was fatigue, anxiety
and then depression. The speakers also explain how, in their case, it was possible to
develop an isolated condition and blame their heads for the issues of mental health.
However, the speakers discovered that sports were working as a comforting solution
towards those problematic issues. Sports made the speaker feel more connected to
people, relieve their stress as well as self- image.

The speaker talks about the endorphins released during exercise. They say that these
natural hormones can induce euphoria, commonly referred to as ‘the runner’s high’.
Endorphin spike and regular exercise can enhance your attention, happiness, and even
your recall.
Reflection:
Sports and recreation have been instrumental in my mental health journey. My parents
encouraged an active lifestyle, which led to my discovery table tennis and gym
workouts. These activities have been invaluable in reducing stress, improving my
mood, and providing a sense of purpose.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, sports and recreational activities are essential for mental health and
well-being. They reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while also improving mood,
self-esteem, and social connections. Community sports also build resilience,
teamwork, and coping skills. Reflecting on these benefits, I now see sports not just as
physical activity, but also as a mental exercise, strengthening your willpower and
enhancing mental health, while fostering a stronger, more connected society.
