FLUID MECHANICS TEST
Question One
The velocity distribution of flow over a plate is parabolic with vertex 30cm from the plate,
where the velocity is 180 cm/s. if the viscosity of fluid is 0.9 N.s/m². find the velocity
gradients and the shear stresses at distances 0, 15 and 30 cm from the plate.
Question Two
A U-tube manometer is used to measure the pressure of oil of specific gravity 0.83 flowing in
a pipe line. Its left end is connected to the pipe and right limb is open to the atmosphere. The
center of the pipe is 120’5 cm below the level of mercury (specific gravity = 13.6) in the right
limb. If the difference of mercury level in the two limbs is 160cm, determine the absolute
pressure of the oil in the pipe.
Question Three
A masonry dam trapezoidal in cross-section is 4m wide at the top, 6m wide at the base and
100cm high. It retains water level with top against a vertical face. Obtain stress distribution at
the base if the specific gravity of masonry is 3.12.
Question Four
A rectangular plate 1m base and 1.5m height is immersed in water. The plane of the plate is
inclined at 30º with water surface while the base is parallel to and at a depth of 2m from the
water surface. Calculate
i.
ii.
The total pressure on the plate, and
The position of the centre of pressure
Question Five
The masonry dam of trapezoidal section has its upstream face vertical. The height is 10m and
top is 3m wide. Find the minimum width of the base if there is no tension at the base and
water reaches the top of the dam.
Take weight of water = 9.81 KN/m³ and weight of the masonry = 22 KN/m³. what is the
maximum compressive stress at the base.
