Introduction to disciplines of Biology
Zoology
Botany
Biochemistry
 BIOLOGY
Physiology
Microbiology
Agriculture
Medicine & other related fields
Zoology
 The study of animals - their morphology, growth,
distribution, classification and behaviour
Botany
 The study of the origin, structure, development,
growth, function, genetics, and reproduction of
plants.
Biochemistry
 The study of the composition, chemical structures,
and chemical reactions of living things.
Physiology
 The biological science concerned with the life-
supporting properties, functions, and processes of
living organisms or their parts.
Microbiology
 Microbiology is the study of microscopic
organisms, which are defined as any living organism
that is either a single cell (unicellular), a cell cluster,
or has no cells at all (acellular).
 This includes eukaryotes such as; fungi, protists,
and prokaryotes.
Agriculture
 Agriculture, also called farming or husbandry, is
the cultivation of animals, plants, fungi, and other life
forms for food, fiber, biofuel and other products used
to sustain life.
Medicine and others
 Medicine is the art of healing as practiced by
physicians and similar professionals and
encompasses all sciences related to it.
 It is the applied science or practice of the diagnosis,
treatment and prevention of disease.
 It encompasses a variety of health care practices
evolved to maintain and restore health by the
prevention and treatment of illness in human beings.
Quiz 1 (Disciplines in biology)
Instructions: Research about the discipline/s of your
choice and answer these questions on BB.
 Which discipline is of interest to you and why?
 What are the requirements for that discipline of your
choice? (courses or modules)
 Where can you be employed if you followed that discipline
of your choice?
 What is required for one to be a possible candidate for the
job within that discipline?
