Particular Applications
For oxygen compression
For carbon monoxide compression
To compress dry gases with low dew point
To compress clean gases
To compress contaminated gases
If the gas- and pressure-tight crankcase is an advantage
Pressure up to 300 bar
Flow up to 30'000 Nm3/h

Design
Sandwich piston design, system
requires numerous plastic and metal
elements
Simple design of piston, easy
maintenance
Temperature
Discharge temperature limited due to
piston ring material.
Metal piston skirts instead of polymer
piston rings allow high discharge
temperatures if required by the
process
„Hot spots“
„Hot spots“ due to friction can lead to
polymerisation or melt particles carried
over in the gas
Long service life since piston move in
cylinders without friction, therefor not
subject to continuous wear

Page 12
Comparison between Ring and Labyrinth Piston
Piston with Plastic Rings
Pollution due to abrasives from plastic
rings carried in gas stream
Piston with Labyrinth
Compressed gas is delivered with
unchaged purity, risk of carry over of
abrasives from piston, rider or packing
rings is eliminated
Contaminated gases
Small particles carried in the gas
stream increase piston ring wear
In all cases where the process gas is
contaminated, the labyrinth piston will
not wear
Cylinder liners
Piston and rider rings sliding along the
cylinder wall require cyliner liners with
superfinished surface
Cylinder liners are not required
Lifetime
Continuous wear due to dry running
piston rings and therefore reduced
lifetime and high maintenance costs
(more frequent shutdowns)
Long service life since piston move in
cylinders without friction, therefor not
subject to continuous wear
