What is pressure?
Pressure refers to the force exerted per
unit area eg. in a gas .
The amount of force applied by gas
molecules colliding with the walls of a
container.
How To increase OR decrease pressure in a Gas?
• To increase the pressure of a gas, you can either decrease its volume
(by compressing it)
• increasing the temperature. - this increases the force of each collision.
• decreasing the volume. - this increases the number of collisions per
second.
How decreasing the
pressure affects the
rate of reaction ?
• When a pressure is increased the volume is decreased which reduces
their collisions with each other, which in turn slows down the rate of
reaction.
How does pressure help
in chemical reactions
• High pressure = more crowded = more bumping
= faster reactions (usually)
• Pressure increases the gases concentration
resulting in the increase of the rate of
reaction.
