Case Analysis: The Case of the Bothered Staff Members
Dexter and Tony have served as staff in the department of Ms. Herrera for
five years. Both of them are hardworking and dedicated in their jobs. They provide
assistance to her when needed, especially in hitting the target goals. Dexter is
tasked to prepare the leads, do telemarketing and sales calls, present to clients and
do follow ups. Tony, on the other hand, monitors her schedule and does the files
management.
The job of Ms. Herrera as a manager has been manageable, thanks to both
of them. However, additional work was given to her by the upper management:
close deals with clients in handling their corporate events for the quarter. The
upper management has been monitoring the revenues in the last three months.
She is confident that her staff/team will help her with the task. Presentations and
reports need to be rushed in order to meet the deadline.
As she was drafting the presentation needed for tomorrow, she received a
knock on her door. Dexter has some concerns:
Dexter:
Ma’am, may I come in? I just have some concerns.
Ms. Herrera: Sure, Dexter. What about it?
Dexter:
I have been in the company for five years and been doing the same
tasks. Every day, I sales, I call prospects, but they always turn me down whenever
I ask for an appointment to present.
Ms. Herrera: I understand your concern. However, we still have to try. Why not
read the articles that I have you on how to pitch our company? I can send you to a
training about how to make sales calls. Let me ask the HR to check if there are
trainings in the next few weeks.
Dexter: Ma’am, umh . . . . I really don’t know what to do anymore. That’s the
reason why I filed for leave of absence tomorrow. I placed the form on top of your
table, Ma’am. I think it is better for me to take a day off.
Ms. Herrera: I saw it. But Dexter, this is an unplanned leave. We are pressed for
time for the presentation tomorrow and I need you to finish it. The upper
management is counting on us to close the deals in our pipeline this month. It is
very critical.
Dexter: I know, Ma’am. I am sorry, Ma’am. I am not sure if I can make it
tomorrow.
After the conversation with Dexter, she is stressed and pressed for time to make
sure that everything will go as planned. Suddenly, she asked Tony to go to her
office.
Ms. Herrera: Tony, do you know why I called you?

Tony:
I am not sure why, Ma’am.
Ms. Herrera: I noticed that you have yet to improve on making sure that the files
are arranged per client. There were some missing documents that were placed in
another client’s envelope. As I was looking for a specific for a specific document
from ABC Company, I had to go through the entire drawer to look for it. What a
waste of time!
Tony stared on the ground for a long time.
Ms. Herrera: Well, Tony? Are you going to say something? Or you want me to
guess what’s going on?
Tony:
I am sorry, Ma’am. I am trying my best to make sure I properly file
everything. My job has become monotonous in the past five years. I don’t feel like I
am growing here.
If you were Ms. Herrera, how will you solve this dilemma? Which management
theory will you use to ensure that you still make the deadline? What skill or
qualities of a manager should you use to ensure that you still make the deadline?
What skill or qualities for a manager should you use to address Dexter and Tony’s
concerns? How would you resolve the conflict?
Use the table below to guide you in your answer. You may use another sheet of
paper if the spaces given below are not enough. (Submit only hard copy. Thank
you.)
Major Concerns
1. Dexter doesn’t want to do sales calls
anymore as he is demotivated by the
number of prospects that turns down
his request for a corporate
presentation.
2. Tony is making mistakes here and
there.
As Manager, How would you resolved
it?
(What theory will you use? What skills
or quality or a manager will you
practice
Ms. Herrera should consider using the
human relation theory, the theory
states that attention should be focus
more on the productivity and
professional growth of the workers.
Given that Dexter is demotivated due to
unanswered requests for a corporate
presentation, Ms. Herrera should had
put her attention to this problem before
hand, and provided appropriate
trainings and proper support that can
boost the confidence and can uplift the
morale of Dexter.
One of the roles of a manager is to
develop, motivate and to provide
support for employees facing challenges
at their work. Ms. Herrera should
incorporate first to Tony how valuable
and important his work is. She may
advice Tony to keep track of his ideas

3. Dexter has a pending request for
leave of absence which he filed
yesterday. It is an unplanned leave.
You are pressed for time for the
presentation tomorrow.
4. Tony is devastated because he thinks
he is not growing in the company by
doing the same tasks over and over
again.
and coach him how to file documents
in a simple and proper way in order for
him to execute his job properly. One
specific example of this is for Tony to
write down all the files needed to be
arranged using electronic
organizational tool.
Ms. Herrera should exercise her strong
and proactive leadership in this
scenario. Given that the leave is
unplanned and have an important
presentation to make, Ms. Herrera
could disapprove his leave of absence
dealt with professionalism and seek
two-way communication in order for
them to set a common understanding.
Human relation also states that the
manager should provide professional
growth to his/her employees. One way
of showing this is by letting them make
their own decision and involved them
in making decisions. This commitment
leads to increased productivity as
employees are actively participating in
various aspect of the organization.
Through this, Tony can develop
creativity and professional growth.

Case 1: The contingency approach says that the most effective leadership style varies based on
circumstances rather than designating one approach as the most effective. Company B should build
good relationship with the employees of Company A by adapting their leadership style based on a
given situation. This approach could give the managers a careful analysis on the given situation and
make a quick adjustment to their leadership style based on their employees’ reactions.
Case 2: System theory allows for an understanding of the connections between various parts of an
organization and how they interact with one another. In a system approach, different departments
should be unified and everything is interrelated. In this situation the manager should make sure that all
units of the manufacturing company should function together towards a collective goal. In this case,
where the different department lack communication resulted in unfavorable problem, the system theory
dictates that the whole organization won’t be able to complete its task for a problem in one part affects
the other parts, too. To address this matter, managers should focus on solving problems and adjusting
their units together correctly.
Case 3: Theory X style managers believe their employees are less intelligent, lazier, and work solely for
a sustainable income. Managers who believe employees operate in this manner are more likely to use
rewards or punishment as motivation. According to McGregor, one way of implementing Theory X is
through hard approach. The hard approach depends on close supervision, intimidation, and immediate
punishment. This could lead Mrs. Reyes to have complete control of the work, this produces a more
systematic and uniform product or work flow. Using this theory, it allows Mrs. Reyes to produce a higher
quantity and quality of work.
Case 4: I think Mr. Basa should use the Chaos Theory to address this matter. Chaos Theory states
that autonomy and the degree of freedom should be visible within an organization. This theory
addresses lack of professional growth and motivation. It means instead of being over controlling to
prevent your people from making mistakes provide guidance and allow people to make their own
decisions as much as possible. Find ways to stimulate your team’s creativity for their professional
growth and being willing to forget rules and conventions for the sake of fresh ideas.
