INDUSTRIAL TRAINING GUIDE
INDUSTRIAL TRAINING GUIDELINES FOR THE FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND
TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS
1. A student shall not change place of attachment prior to notifying the Industrial Training
Coordinator or the Assistant Industrial Training Coordinator.
2. All students are required to be on duty at their respective places of attachment during the
Mid-Semester Break. Failure to report for duty, without any valid reason, will necessitate
stern disciplinary action being taken.
3. All Faculty of Engineering and Technology students on industrial attachment shall be fully
covered by both the insurance and medical schemes of the University of Botswana.
4. Students who continue to receive training at the same company of industrial attachment or
another company after completing the required period of industrial training will not be
covered by the University of Botswana insurance and medical schemes unless otherwise
stated.
5. Compassionate leave shall be granted to students, only on the availability of evidence to
warrant such leave (minimum of 3 working days). The student shall henceforth be required
to make up for the lost time and it shall be the responsibility of the Industrial Training Unit
to request extension of time for the student.
6. In the event that a student is absent from the workplace due to illness, a certified copy of the
Doctor’s medical certificate should be forwarded to the company Industrial Training
Supervisor and the Industrial Training Unit. The student shall be required to make up for the
lost time after fully recovery. The Industrial Training Unit will have to request extension of
attachment period for the student.
7. Students who absent themselves from duty without any valid reasons must also make up for
the lost time at their own expenses at the end of the industrial training period. Incidentally,
such behaviour may warrant disciplinary action.
8. Companies are not obliged to provide accommodation expect under special circumstances
(i.e. if the company moves the student to another project of their own in a different location
the company would normally provide accommodation).
9. Students are expected to be punctual at the location of placement, and adhere to the rules
and regulations of the company.
10. In-service students are advised to go on leave only after completing the required industrial
training attachment period.
11. The student must give a brief description of work undertaken in the appropriate space
provided in the log-book. Furthermore, both the student and the immediate Company
Industrial Supervisor are advised to sign the Log-book on a daily basis or agree on another
arrangement suitable to both parties.
12. The Confidential Report form must be completed by the student’s immediate Company
Industrial Supervisor four (4) weeks before the end of the industrial training programme and
must be faxed or mailed to the Industrial Training Coordinator. Copies of the confidential
report must be kept by the company Industrial Training Supervisor for the record.
13. The student’s end of industrial training report, must be typed and bound together with the
logbook sheets. The report must be submitted in duplicate two (2) weeks after re-opening of
the academic year/ semester.
14. The format of the report is indicated on page 11 of the Industrial Training Manual for
guidance on report writing.
15. Students must be conversant with Industrial Training Responsibilities of various parties
involved in this exercise (refer to the manual).
16. Students are advised to prepare a rough draft of the final report whilst on industrial
attachment. This little piece of advice will help the student to compile the expected typed
final report in a short period of time. Furthermore, this draft would also serve as back-up in
case of lost or corrupted text of the final typed report.
17. It is of paramount importance for students to make an effort to interact well with company
employees and to build a harmonious working atmosphere as this would lead to learning
how to work as a team. Students should remember that they are the ambassadors of the
University of Botswana and must conduct themselves in a dignified manner that would
portray a positive image for the institution. Certainly, being courteous and humble will win
one friendship, respect and assistance from company employees.
18. It should be borne in mind that these companies or organizations are potential employers.
Therefore, it is advisable to students to perform at a very high level to impress and possibly
pave a way for possible future employment.
19. Students should be initiative and learn to work with less supervision.
20. This is an appropriate opportunity for students to get to know the industry better and also
prepare them what to expect after successful completion of their programmes of study.
21. It is also advisable that students call the Industrial Training Unit at the earliest possible time
when relevant Department Supervisors do not show up to assess the student’s industrial
training progress.
