Lesson #5: Kerbs / Curbs CIE 122: Highway and Railroad Engineering 01 Define the meaning of Kerbs What is Kerbs / Curbs? Purpose of Kerbs / Curbs? 02 Define the types of Kerbs Different Kinds of Kerbs / Curbs? CONTENTS 01 What is a Kerb / Curb A kerb is a vertical or sloping edge along a pavement or shoulder that separates different types of traffic, such as vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. 1.1 Purpose of a Kerb / Curb • Works as a barrier • Helps to provide road drainage • Help to prevent unnecessary traffic movements • Prevent accident • Prevents encroachment of parking • Provide separation between two adjacent lanes • Enhanced Aesthetic 02 Types of Curbs 1) Low or Mountable curbs 2) Semi-barrier type curbs 3) Barrier-type curbs 4) Submerged curbs Low or Mountable curbs (Class I) - To control traffic to stay within its lane. - Height of 10 cm above the pavement - It facilitates the driver to enter the area of the shoulder with less difficulty. Semi-barrier type curbs (Class II) - Prevents slow-moving or parked vehicles from encroaching on footpaths. - They are typically 15cm in height - Effective in preventing tire damage or damaging the kerb. Barrier-type curbs (Class III) - Provides a barrier for high-speed vehicles. - Prevent vehicles from crossing into restricted zones (e.g., sidewalks, parks, or lawns.) - Improves pedestrian safety and blocks water flow onto sidewalks. Submerged curbs (Class IV) - Provides lateral stability for rural pavements. - Made from bricks or concrete blocks. - Used in stormwater management systems. 2.1 Different Curbs Profiles 1) Half-battered kerb 2) Bull-nosed kerb 3) Splayed kerb 4) Square kerb Half Battered Kerb Bullnosed Kerb Splayed Kerb Squared Kerb THANK YOU!
