Questions 9 – 18
Read the text below and choose the best word for each space. For each question, mark the
correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.
Bodyguards
There have been many movies, novels and web series which have been (0) centred around
bodyguards. More often than not, these are high-packed action flicks though some may
(9)
romance too. But what exactly does a bodyguard do? Well, obviously the first
job of a bodyguard is to make sure that no harm comes to his or her client.
Her? Yes, today many bodyguards are women because they are more inconspicuous, and many
attackers do not think they are a threat. In fact, because other parts of the (10)
are
more important than physical strength, women make very good bodyguards.

THIEVES CAUGHT IN THE ACT
Seremban, Mon. – A series of school break-ins and thefts came to an end when
two students were caught in the act last night.
Two fifteen-year-old boys were caught by the school security guard trying to climb
over the school fence with some stolen goods. The boys had two laptops and some
cash with them. The lock of the staffroom was broken and the place ransacked.
Most bodyguards have military backgrounds and others come from government agencies which
have the job of protecting (11)
politicians. These days some private companies
offer training for bodyguards.
Bodyguards do not have any special privileges under the law. They are only allowed to carry
guns or other weapons in very (12)
circumstances. And if they injure or kill
anybody (13)
the course of their work, they will have the same problems with
the police as any other person would have.
People need bodyguards for different reasons. Celebrities are (14)
in danger of
attacks from haters, and need protection as do some politicians with controversial reputations.
Finally, wealthy people (15)
bodyguards for their children to avoid the risk of
kidnapping.
The job of the bodyguard is to get between the client and an attacker. (16)
a good
bodyguard will try to prevent that by changing the client’s routine and security to make attacks
less likely.
It is not a popular career option. Many bodyguards get injured at work, but most injuries are
(17)
. Serious attacks on a person’s life are infrequent, and the biggest problem a
bodyguard faces is to (18)
constantly alert. Having a client harmed because of
inattention is a great disgrace for a bodyguard.

I had also read long ago that farmers who got stuck in quicksand while rounding sheep
would spreadeagle, that is, lying with arms and legs spread out. This is to spread your
weight so you would not sink immediately. But with the sand up to my thighs, I knew it
was too late to work out. "My God, I'm being swallowed," I thought. "The sand is eating
me alive!"
3
Yelling for help seemed hopeless. Nobody would hear me. There was no one
around. If they were, they would be miles away. Almost in a panic state, I started to
imagine myself being choked to death as my nose and throat were filled with sand. I had
lost hope. "I'll disappear and nobody will ever know what happened to me."
4
Perhaps if I remained very still, I might delay the slow death. Help might even
arrive before it was too late. But I continued to sink; now above my knees, then another
centimetre and another. I tried to hold my breath. I then tried to wriggle my toes, but my
feet seemed stiff like concrete. Only when the sand climbed to my waist did I stop
sinking. Although my body was still motionless, my brain was spinning. And suddenly,
I had a frightening thought. "Where is the tide? When will it come in again?"
5
I remembered that the tide was going out when I reached the beach, which meant it
wouldn't be back for another nine or ten hours. "I've got a chance after all!" I told myself
with relief. Surely, help would come within the next few hours. Or would it? I told
myself to remain positive and pray for the best.
6
I still must do something and not just wait for help which might never come. I didn't
like the idea of drowning or being swallowed alive. I began to scoop away the sand
around my waist. But as fast as I dug, the sand came back into place. After an hour, my
fingers were numb and sore, my legs were raging with cramps. I stopped digging.
7
Then I heard a roar like a waterfall. Moments later, there was a downpour. Soaked
in seconds, I buried my face in my hands and bowed my head. Trapped in the jaws of
sand, there was nothing more I could do.
8
At the first break of dawn, I shouted again for help. I was tired and weak as I became
more hopeless. I was worried about the incoming tide. For nine hours, I had been
struggling in the sand, motionless, cold and hungry. I tried humming to keep my body
warm. There was not a soul to be seen. Still, I kept on shouting and shouting until I lost
my voice. What else could I do? I learnt later that my shouting could be heard two miles
away.
A. Though
B. Moreover
C. Although
D. However

D. become
Part 3
You are going to read an extract from a story. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct
answer (A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.
1
After a dozen steps, I began to feel myself sinking into the soft sand. I tried to jump
free, but I began to sink deeper. "Oh no! What is happening?" I began to feel frightened
and panicky. In seconds, it was up to my knees. I couldn't do anything now. I tried to get
up and free myself, but it seemed to get worse. I suddenly realised that I was sinking into
quicksand!
2
I was shocked. There was nothing on the beach to suggest that it was soft or
dangerous. Old fishermen knew very well that the swirling of river or tidal current
sometimes dig out empty holes or hollows that are filled with soft sediments like sand.
They are believed to have a big appetite, for they have swallowed fishermen, horses and
carts, motorbikes, and even dump trucks. But I don't believe that. What I know is that
you don't sink in quicksand until you are almost covered up. Humans and animals
typically float in water, so if you are standing upright, the furthest you will sink in the
quicksand is waist deep. If the quicksand is near a river or coastal area, you can still
drown the old-fashioned way when the tide comes in, but you won't choke with a
mouthful of sand or mud.
5
19
In paragraph 2, why are the ‘hollows’ described as having a big appetite?
A They do not stop eating.
B Nothing can float on them.
C They are forever hollow inside.
D They eat anything that comes along.
6
20
21
22
In paragraph 3, why didn’t the writer ‘spreadeagle’ to delay sinking?
A He was sinking gradually.
B His legs got stuck in the sand.
C He was already buried up to his knees.
D The quicksand was too soft for him to do so.
In paragraph 3, the writer did not cry out for help because
A he was deeply buried.
B he was choked by the sand.
C he was very far out of hearing.
D his voice was drowned by the wind.
In paragraph 4, when did the sinking stop?
A When he remained still
B When the tide subsided
C When he was half buried
D When the quicksand stopped shifting

One of his fans from Plymouth, England, said, “I saw every game he played in the 1970 World
Cup and could not get enough of him. That tournament made him football’s first superstar, like Elvis
in music.” On the day before the final, Italy defender Tarcisio Burgnich kept telling himself: “He’s only
a human being just like me.” After the game, he said, “I was wrong.”
What made the Italian defender say, ‘I was wrong’?
A He talked to one of Pelé’ fans from England who watched all his games.
B Pelé’s performance was better than what he first thought.
C He realised Pelé was a superstar after Elvis.
D He saw Pelé’ games on the eve of the final.
23
Pelé remained very much Pelé to football and the outside world. He was first a businessman
and later the sports minister in Brazil, who was known by his proper name of Edson Arantes do
Nascimento. The official name was indeed long and hard to pronounce and it's hard to think his fame
would have spread and lasted as long as the universally popular "Pelé". Easy to say and impossible to
forget, Pelé was declared the most famous person in the world in 1970, even above Muhammad Ali,
the American professional boxer.
Why did the fans decide to celebrate his life instead of being sad?
A They felt he had touched the stars.
B They were from Brazil, where he was a legend.
C They believed eighty-two was a good age for his background.
D They felt his mother had a difficult life and not aware of his death.
24

B A time when the lightbulb was invented.
C A moment of confusion about the name.
D A time when electricity came to the town.

People consider Pelé an example because
A he was always surrounded by famous people.
B he was perfect both on and off the field.
C he was an inspiration for many people.
D he was buried with a football.
26
What does the writer want to highlight in the story?
A The football legends he influenced during his career.
B Pelé’s personal life and challenges off the field.
C Pelé’s influence on global football culture.
D The impact of Pelé's career on football.
Questions 19 to 26 are based on the following passage.
Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. For each question, mark your
answer on the answer sheet.
Football is crying. “Even the sky is crying,” a Brazilian newspaper reporter wrote during Pelé’s
last game. That was half a century ago, and the tears are flowing again for the successful football player
who once worked as a shoe polisher. More than a week since his death and into a new year, the game
is sad for its king, still praising him and debating his place in history.
As a footballer, he was as close to perfect as it gets. Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona used
their right legs only for standing, but Pelé could do more. He was stronger and 2.5 cm taller than Messi,
while Messi was lighter and faster. Nor did he need to use his hand like Maradona did. He could run
the 100 m in 11 seconds, and with the ball glued to his feet, he moved smoothly. Altogether, he scored
1,283 goals in 1,363 matches.
Sportswriter Hugh McIlvanney described him best when he wrote: “His relationship with the
ball was different from that achieved by anyone else. Other great footballers concentrated on mastering
and using the ball as a tool. For him, it felt like the ball was his friend, moving around his feet as if it
wanted to be there.” To protect Pelé, Brazil declared him a “national treasure,” stopping him from
moving abroad. But there was a small mistake. His club, Santos, had to tour Europe to earn money, and
host clubs always insisted that Pelé play. And so, he was still open to attack by other players.
Around the year 2000, he was voted World Player of the Century by the International
Federation of Football Historians and Statisticians. In 1999, the International Olympic Committee chose
him as the Athlete of the Century and Time magazine named him one of the 100 Most Important People
of the 20th Century.
“We should stop crying and start celebrating a player who reached for – and touched – the stars.
Eighty-two is a good age for the life he lived and better than average for where he came from,” said his
fans from Brazil. His mother, Celeste, a cart driver’s daughter, was 16 when she gave birth to him in a
small town called Tres Coracoes (Three Hearts), in the south of Rio. His father, Donadinho was a
promising footballer. “We named him after Thomas Edison as electricity had only just come to our
town. However, we spelt the name wrongly, but you could still say it was a lightbulb moment,” said
his 98-year-old mum, who is still alive but has not been told of her son’s death.
He certainly sets an example. He was nowhere near as perfect off the field as he was on it, but
he was not only an inspiration to footballers, he was also in demand by famous people too – he signed
his autograph for 70 presidents, 5 kings, 10 emperors and 2 popes. “When they buried him, I just hope
they did so with a football, for he was never the same without it,” wrote a newspaper reporter.

Technology is an important part of our lives, especially for students. It has changed the
way students learn and interact with their studies. For students, technology can make learning
easier, more interesting, and more fun. Understanding how technology helps students can show
us why it is so valuable in education today.
C
By using technology, students can
prepare for the future and become
more engaged in their studies.
G
One of the best things about technology is that it makes learning fun and interactive.
Instead of just reading from a textbook, students can use computers, tablets, and smartphones to
access educational games, videos, and apps. For example, learning about history can become more
exciting with virtual tours of ancient places or animated stories about famous events. 27
.
Students can use it to research
topics for school projects, find
answers to their questions, and
learn new things.
D
Technology allows students to take
control of their own learning.
H
Teachers and schools need to make
sure everyone has a chance to use
technology.
Part 4
Questions 27 to 32
Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.
Students and Technology: Learning in the Digital Age
Technology makes it easier for students to work together, even if they are not in the same
place. Online tools like shared documents and chat rooms help students cooperate on projects and
assignments. 28
.This kind of teamwork helps students learn how to communicate and share
ideas, which are important skills in school and in life.
The internet is full of information. 29
.For example, if a student is curious about
space, they can watch videos, read articles, and even take virtual tours of the solar system. This
makes learning more exciting and helps students become better at finding and using information.
Using technology helps students prepare for the future. 30
. By using technology in
school, students learn how to type, use software, and find information online. These skills will be
very useful when they grow up and start working.
While technology is helpful, it also comes with challenges. Not all students have access to
computers or the internet at home. 31
. It is also important for students to learn how to use
the internet safely. They should know how to protect their personal information and be careful
about what they share online.
In conclusion, technology is a powerful tool for students. It makes learning enjoyable,
allows them to progress at their own pace, helps them work together, and gives them access to a
world of information. 32
.With careful use and guidance, technology can make education
better and more exciting for everyone.

it. Without me realising it, I successfully quit
gaming for a whole year!
I wished the story ended there, but it did not.
After a year of no gaming, I met the girl of my
dreams. She was a gamer who played League of
Legends - the game I deleted a year ago! Being a
considerate man, I wanted to share the hobby with
her as much as possible. So, I got another laptop and
installed League back on it. I believed that this was
to get closer with the girl I liked and that I would
only play with her, and never alone or with others.
It worked for the first few months. Sharing
a hobby with someone you like is an amazing
feeling. Eventually, I asked her out, and we became
a couple. Naturally, our game time together
increased. However, as we played, I noticed a lot of
toxic players brought my mood down. hated it when
a mistake 1 made led to her death (in the game of
course). To compensate for this. I wanted to play
more.
However, unlike me, my girlfriend is
someone who can game in moderation. She would
only play a few hours a week, and there would be
days when she did not feel like playing, allowing me
to play alone. This time gradually increased, and
when I met toxic players, I switched to other games.
This went on for about a year.
After a year of gaming again, I noticed a
change in my behaviour. I became less patient with
people around me, including my girlfriend. At work,
I secretly searched for gaming strategies. I thought
about gaming all the time. I ignored my girlfriend
when she was talking. After 20 hours of gaming in a
weekend, I knew that I had become addicted again.
Learning from the past, I told my girlfriend that I
wanted a video game detox which eventually would
stop me playing video games again. I know I will get
urges and I may reason myself back to gaming again.
But, I believe, I can do this!
I grew up as an average kid riding bikes and
playing football. I was an excellent student at school
and always got good grades. I never had a gaming
console growing up. I played video games with the
family PC but my gaming was kept in check by my
strict parents.
Then university came along. I purposely
chose a school far away from home to experience
independence. Plus, there were no parents to stop me
from gaming. I played all sorts of games and would
often skip lectures to play. The only thing that kept
my gaming in check was the very real fear of
dropping out of school.
The results for my mid-term tests, final test
and projects were very disappointing. They were
terrible. Fortunately, I didn't fail any courses. I felt
lucky that I managed to land a summer internship.
Even to this day, I have no idea how I landed that
job. I honestly think all the other candidates chose
another job, leaving the company with no other
choice but to hire me.
The internship felt like a second chance. I
worked hard. Sometimes, crazy hard. I would work
for average of 60-80 hours a week. While the other
interns were out enjoying parties or travelling, I was
working hard, not to let my second chance escape.
My efforts paid off, and 1 got a full-time offer. I was
due to start after my graduation.
Fast forward a few years. I was working full
time and was gaming in moderation. There were a
couple of sleepless nights of gaming here and there,
but the job kept my gaming in check. Basically, my
schedules were working, sleeping and gaming. I
would attempt to get out and socialise but would
soon give up and go back to gaming. Now that I was
getting comfortable with this new life, I felt my
gaming time was slowly increasing.
After two years, I was accepted into Grad
School, which I had planned to attend part-time after
work. So, I rescheduled my gaming time. The first
couple of months were the toughest. I craved gaming
so much and was depressed for long hours.
However, I got rid of all temptations to get through

microorganism out there that breaks it down. (28) ________ So Mr. Burd did just that. The Waterloo Region
Record explains his experiment.
Burd then went on to identify which of the four bacterial strains in the culture was with the appetite
for plastic. He identified two: Sphingomonas and Pseudomonas. (29) ________. He did plentiful of experiment
and after some experimentation, the results were phenomenal. He was able to get a plastic bag to degrade by
43 percent in six weeks. (30) ________.
It's hard to understate the environmental catastrophe caused by plastic bags. Many of them end up the
Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a swatch of trash twice the size of Texas that is estimated to be 80 percent plastic.
(31) ________. A report by Greenpeace found that some 267 marine species suffer from either ingesting or
getting entangled in the bags. As far as anyone knows, Burd is the first to discover the plastic-devouring
properties of this microbe. (32) ________.

Small populations of the plant- eating marine species dugong (Dugong Dugon) with
flipper-like forelimbs, are found exclusively off the coast of Sabah and they are
seriously in decline.
B
Once widespread throughout mainland Southeast Asia, the Sumatran rhinoceros
(Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) is now a very rare sight. The largest herbivore that lives
exclusively in the tropical rainforest, each animal needs at least 10 square kilometres
to roam in, thus, a large area of undisturbed forest is required for a healthy population
to have any chance of survival.
C
Exclusively a forest dweller, the clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) feeds on
squirrels, birds and monkeys, including young orang utan which are themselves a
protected species. Its survival is seriously threatened. Only very few recent sightings
have been made in isolated forests.
D
In 1992, 113 Asian elephant herds (Elephas maximus), totalling 1,000 animals,
existed on the Peninsula. The clearing of lowland forest for agricultural use has
fragmented habitats and elephant populations. As a result, the amount of food and
cover will diminish and the chances of breeding will be reduced.
E
Found in lowland forest, tree -lined swamps and riverine habitats of Sabah and
Sarawak, the Storm’s stork (Ciconia stormi) is now a rare resident, totalling fewer than
200 individuals.

Malaysia’s national animal, a prancing pair of which adorn the country’s crest, is now
under threat. The Malayan tiger was long considered a livestock-preying pest but,
because of the large-scale clearance of lowland forest, which also supports the
greatest proportion of the animal’s prey – wild boar and sambar deer – and more
