Topic: Different Lives. Page: 190, question 3-a,b,c. A- What do Yinka and Mankwinji’s physical auctions suggest about their personalities and experiences? ● Yinka’s physical actions from the extract shows that Yinka is ambitious and determined. Despite her mother pulling her down her mind is still set straight on her goals. Mankwinjis physical actions suggest that she is pessimistic towards Yinka's goals. This also helps us understand that Makwinji possibly had the same goals/ ambitions at her younger age but they bore no fruits. As a result she feels as if Yinka is wasting her youth pursuing a goal she’ll never get. B- How does the set design establish the main theme of social inequality? What does the playwright suggest about life in Zimbabwe? ● The set design shows the clear contrast between the poor rural folk and the modern well to do folk. The quote “The poor area is depicted by a reed mat and rolled torn blankets” gives us an insight to the day in the life of poverty. This tells us why Yinka wants to leave the village and pursue her dreams in the city. C- How do the title of the play and the symbol of flight reflect Yinka’s ambitions. ● The motif of the flight symbolizes the departure of the village to a new life in the city. The different lives show us the difference between the two lives.
