ACTIVITY B: ACTIVITY C: READ: One of the primary considerations in writing is to communicate one’s ideas to others. But being able to communicate is not just enough. A writer must also consider whether his writing is appropriate and follows certain conventions. In academic writing, aside from observing correct structure and objectivity, one must also observe formality and impersonality. These features of academic writing are also important which will be discussed in this lesson. Features of Academic Writing 1. Impersonality. Academic writing involves in presenting and evaluating issues and obtains an objective position. This position is based on facts through research and reasoning instead of personal feelings and opinions. The use of I, we, you is avoided because these are associated with subjective views that are influenced by personal preferences. Example: 1. We obtained the data through interview and observation. Answer: The researchers obtained the data through interview and observation. 2. You can illustrate the huge impact of climate change by studying the accelerating rise in sea level over time. Answer: The huge impact of climate change can be illustrated by studying the accelerating rise in sea level over time. (the topic : huge impact of climate change is used as the subject instead of you) 2. Formality. Academic writing should employ formal language and avoids contractions, informal or colloquial words, cliches , and figures of speech. The use of two-word verbs or verb phrases are also discouraged in academic writing. Colloquial words: ➢ a lot of, sort of, kinda, stuff, pretty good Example: There a lot of reasons why most projects fail during the initial stage of the program. Answer: There are numerous reasons why most project fail during the initial stage of the program. Two-word verb phrase: ➢ look at,/into, builds up, set up, bring about Example: The students looked at the changes of the peeled potato on a dish. Answer: The students observed the changes of the peeled potato on a dish. Three-word verb phrase: ➢ come up with, get rid of, look up to, look down on, has gone up Examples: get rid of – eliminate look up to – admire Contractions: ➢ This isn’t the case. – This is not the case. ACTIVITY D: ACTIVITY E: MAKING OF A PERFECT EXCUSE LETTER! (This is for your final output for MODULE 1) Create an excuse letter (Long bondpaper with no borders since it is formal.) Be mindful of the margin. REASON for the excuse letter: YOU WERE ABSENT LAST MARCH 19 BECAUSE YOU WENT TO THE DOCTOR’S CLINIC. (YOU CAN USE ANY REASONS YOU LIKE) Be mindful of the spaces. All parts of the excuse letter should be observed. USE THE FORMAL LANGUAGE/ FORMALITY FEATURE WHEN MAKING AN ACADEMIC PAPER. YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO CREATE AN EXCUSE LETTER SO THERE’S NO REASON FOR YOU NOT TO GET A PERFECT SCORE. USE THE LEARNINGS YOU HAVE IN CREATING THE LETTER. GOOD LUCK!!
