Myofunctional Therapy
What is it?
Myofunctional therapy refers to an exercise regimen of the facial musculature in order to
treat Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs).
According to the Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (AOMT), OMDs are defined as
“disorders of the muscles and functions of the face and mouth. OMDs may affect, directly
and/or indirectly, breastfeeding, facial skeletal growth and development, chewing,
swallowing, speech, occlusion, temporomandibular joint movement, oral hygiene, stability
of orthodontic treatment, facial esthetics, and more.”
As previously mentioned, the premier approach to treating OMDs is Orofacial
Myofunctional Therapy, or OMT. OMT can help with underlying comorbidities such as
Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Temporomandibular disorders. A Myofunctional Therapist can
help you by creating a specialized treatment plan suited to your specific needs. Every
regimen is different and must be tailored to an individual, and having an expert guide is
crucial to long-term success.
Exercises are done with and without props, which are provided free-of-charge by Happy
Myo after the initial assessment. The treatment is not magic- it requires consistent practice
and checkins with your myofunctional therapist. The results of following the treatment
plan, however, certainly feel like magic. Without the use of drugs or surgery, you will have
marked improvements in the function of your orofacial musculature.
I have written more details on the following blog post for those who are looking for a more
granular explanation of OMT: Myofunctional Therapy: An Addendum
Want to get started or learn more?
A variety of OMT exercises involve physical props that allow you to focus on the correct
muscles. In addition to ample 1:1 coaching, frequent checkins and the ability to ask me any
questions, I also include these exercise tools free of charge with my program. More
information about what an assessment and treatment plan looks like can be found at An
Assessment with Julia
