DEFINITIONS OF
CURRICULUM
Traditional vs. Progressive
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
“It is a written document that
systematically describes goals
planned, objectives, content,
learning activities, evaluation
procedures and so forth.”
DAVID PRATT,
PH.D.
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
“Curriculum is a planned and
guided set of learning
experiences and intended
outcomes, formulated through
the systematic reconstruction of
knowledge and experiences
under the auspices of the
school, for the learners’
continuous and willful growth in
personal social competence.”
DANIEL TANNER,
PH.D.
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
“The contents of a subject,
concepts and tasks to be
acquired, planned activities, the
desired learning outcomes and
experiences, product of culture
and an agenda to reform society
make up a curriculum”
WILLIAM H.
SCHUBERT, PH.D.
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
“A curriculum refers to the
totality of the learner’s
experiences which they undergo
to achieve the intended learning
outcomes of a program of
study.”
MINA DE GUZMAN,
2024
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
APPROACHES TO
CURRICULUM
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
CURRICULUM AS A CONTENT/
BODY OF KNOWLEDGE
This approach is evident when a
curriculum is equated to topics, a topic
outline, subject matter, or concepts
presented in a syllabus or books. The
focus is on the body of knowledge to be
transmitted to the learners.
i.e: what should be learned my BTVTED
students in Educ14?
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
CURRICULUM AS A PROCESS
When viewed as a process, the
curriculum refers to the interaction
between the teachers, the learners, and
the contents. Its focus is on the
teaching methods or strategies used to
achieve the intended outcomes
i.e: if this is the content, how should I
teach it?
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
CURRICULUM AS A PRODUCT
Curriculum as a product is
expressed in the forms of
outcomes
which
are
referred
to
as
desired
learning outcomes.
i.e: what should my students
be able to perform (learning
outcomes)?

TYPES OF
CURRICULUM
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
IDEAL/RECOMMENDED CURRICULUM
These are prescribed by
professional organizations
as most appropriate for a
specific group of learners.
These may come in the
form of policies, standards,
and guidelines.
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
INTENDED/WRITTEN CURRICULUM
These come in the form of a course of
study, syllabi, and lesson plans.
These documents are developed by a
school and/or the teachers using the
ideal/recommended
curriculum
as
reference.
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
IMPLEMENTED/TAUGHT CURRICULUM
This type of curriculum refers to the
actual implementation of the written
curriculum. This is basically what the
teachers teach in the classroom.
This greatly depends on the skill of the
teacher and the learning style of the
learners.
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
SUPPORTED CURRICULUM
This refers to the curriculum
that is reflected on and shaped
by the resources allocated to
support or deliver the official
curriculum (Glatthorn et al.,
2006)
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
ASSESSED/TESTED CURRICULUM
Refers to the set of learning that is
assessed
in
teacher-made
tests,
curriculum-referenced tests, and in
standardized tests (Glatthorn et al.,
2006)
Assessment for learning
Assessment of learning
Assessment as learning
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
ACHIEVED/LEARNED CURRICULUM
This refers to the result of the
curriculum or what the students
actually learned in school (Print,
1993).
This also covers the demonstrated
higher order thinking skills and
lifelong skills
De Guzman, MCS | 1st Semester AY 2024 - 2025
HIDDEN/IMPLICIT CURRICULUM
This refers to the various KSA that students
learn in school as a result of interaction
with other students, staff, and faculty
members. This is not actually taught in
formal classroom learning, but can be a
product of the student’s schooling (Pawilen,
2015)
