Read a blog about a woman who travelled
around the world. Match sentences A–H with
gaps 1–5. There are three extra sentences.
Around the world in 30 days
One of my favourite books when I was young was
Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne. It’s
about an explorer who was called Phileas Fogg.
He tried to travel around the world in 80 days. 1__
He went by train, boat and elephant! It was a long
and difficult journey, but he did it! Today modern
transport is very different and we can choose from
lots of different ways of travelling. I wanted
a challenge. If Phileas Fogg could do it 80 days,
I wanted to see if I could travel around the world in
just 30 days!
I knew that I didn’t want to travel alone, so I asked
my best friend, Lisa, to come with me. 2__ We
planned our trip very carefully. We made a list of all
the things we wanted to see and we booked roundthe-world plane tickets. It took us a long time to
pack because we didn’t want to forget anything.
We began our trip in New York, America, and took
a plane to Amsterdam in Holland. This beautiful city
on the water was a great place to start. Then we
went by train to Rome in Italy. This took us a few
days and we passed through many interesting
countries. After that, we flew to Mumbai in India
where we saw a number of attractive temples. Then
we flew to Bangkok in Thailand. This is a
spectacular, colourful city! From there, we took the
train to Ho Chi Min City in Vietnam. This was our
favourite country because the people were so
welcoming and friendly. 3__ But the other
passengers were very kind and looked after me until
I felt better. We flew from Vietnam back to San
Francisco on the west coast of America and then
the last part of our journey was the flight back home
to New York.
Overall, we had a really wonderful time. Even
though we spent more than 50 hours in the air, we
still had time to explore the countries that we visited.
We saw amazing places that we will never forget.
4__ We learned a lot about the world.
What advice do I have for other people who want to
travel around the world? Do it! 5__ Think about the
places that you want to visit in each country and
give yourself enough time in each place. Also, travel
light! Travel as light as possible! Your bag will feel
very heavy after three or four days! Finally, when
you get home, write a blog about your adventure!
I’m always very interested to read about other
people’s travels! Happy travelling!

amazing.
B At first, she wasn’t sure about the trip, but
I managed to persuade her.

about their culture and history.
E But make sure you plan your trip very carefully.
F This was a difficult thing to do in 1872!
G In the end, she decided that she couldn’t come
with me.
H While we were travelling on the train through
Vietnam, I began to feel very ill.
