Group
Social psychologists consider a group to be composed of two or more
people who interact and depend on each other to achieve a particular
objective.
A group is a set of people, organizations or things that have something
common in.
Example: - Basketball team, musical club, Sociology class, cricket team.
Each group shares common ideas or information with each other within
the group.

Features of Groups
Groups usually have the following features:
Norms: That determine appropriate behavior of group members.
Roles: Are assigned to group members that determine what behaviors
and responsibilities individual should take on.
Communication structure: That determines who talk with whom within
the group.
Power structure: That determines how much authority and influence
group members have.

Forming stage
Initial entry of member in the Group
Members’ concerns include:
Getting to know each others
Determining group’s real task
Defining group rules
Guidance is needed from the leader

Feelings going through members include uncertainty they ask themselves

“Do I belong” and “will I be accepted by group”

Storming stage
The second stage of group development, characterized by intragroup
conflict.
A period of high emotionality and tension among group members.
Members’ concerns include:
Dealing with outside demands
Clarifying membership expectations
Dealing with obstacles to group goals
Understanding members’ interpersonal style

Norming stage
The
third
stage
of
group
development,
characterized
by
close
relationships and cohesiveness.
A period at which group begins to come together as a coordinated unit.
Members’ concerns include:
Holding group together
Dealing with divergent views and criticisms
Creativity is high
People know where they fit and what is expected from them

Performing stage
The fourth stage of group development when group is fully functional and
works on group’s task.
A point at which people work independently
Members’ concerns consisted:
High commitment
Roles are clear
Each member is able to organize itself
Better understand each other and assigned task within the group.
Members deal with complex tasks

Adjourning stage
• The final stage of group development where the goal of a group is
achieved.
• A period at which the team’s work is completed.
• The members may go separate ways and good bye other members after
accomplishing the group goal.
• They may stay together to form an other group.
• It is difficult stage for those who have become close with others and they
may see never each other.
