Course Overview
Course Description: This course focuses on ordinary differential equations, including linear equations, systems
of equations, equations with variable coefficients, existence and uniqueness of solutions, series solutions, singular
points, transform methods, and boundary value problems; application of differential equations to real-world
problems.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
• Identify homogeneous equations, homogeneous equations with constant coefficients, and exact and linear
differential equations.
• Solve ordinary differential equations and systems of equations using: 1) Direct integration 2) Separation
of variables 3) Reduction of order 4) Methods of undetermined coefficients and variation of parameters 5)
Series solutions 6) Operator methods for finding particular solutions 7) Laplace transform methods.
• Determine particular solutions to differential equations with given boundary conditions or initial
conditions.
• Analyze real-world problems in fields such as Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Engineering, and Physics,
including problems related to population dynamics, mixtures, growth and decay, heating and cooling,
electronic circuits, and Newtonian mechanics.
General Education Outcomes:
• Critical Thinking: Students will develop habits of mind, allowing them to appreciate the processes by
which scholars in various disciplines organize and evaluate data and use the methodologies of each
discipline to understand the human experience.

course. You do not need to wait until you have received a poor grade before asking for my assistance. Your
performance in my class is very important to me. I am available to hear your concerns and just to discuss course
topics. You can email me, and I’ll answer your questions and address your concerns.
Online Classroom Learning Course: This is a distance learning online/classroom course. Content delivered
through a combination of web-based and classroom activities. This course uses components of computer
instruction using the San Jacinto College’s learning management system, Blackboard, in addition to multimedia
activities and classroom time. On-campus classroom time is not required. You must have good computer skills
and basic knowledge of Blackboard. The following are characteristics I believe are essential for students to
possess to successfully complete a hybrid class: Self-Disciplined, Self-Motivated, Responsible, Independent,
Organized, and Good Time Management Skills. I look forward to my experience this semester as your online
instructor; just as I hope you enjoy this experience as a student.
Instructor Responsibilities:
• Prepare class activities, discussions, & lectures through Blackboard.
• Facilitate an effective learning environment.
• Prepare class assignments and exams.
• Evaluate & provide prompt feedback on exams, assignments, and class activities.
Student Responsibilities:
• Attend class and participate in class discussions & activities. Mandatory. Attendance will be counted
as completion of in-class daily work. The grade of FX can be given if the course was not dropped by the
student and if excessive absences contributed to a failure to pass the course.
I expect you to log on to this course in Blackboard at least 2 times a week. I can and WILL track how
many times you log on, how much time you spend, and what you spend that time on! This will be part of
your attendance/participation grade (see grade formula). Think of it this way, if you take a face to face
course, you spend 3 hours a week in class, and at least an additional 4 hours in preparation (which
includes reading the textbook, studying, completing assignments, etc). You can expect to spend the same
amount of time for this course. In my face to face classes, I also expect student participation.
• Read and comprehend the textbook. You need to read each week material in the textbook. As you read
the chapter, use the PowerPoint lecture notes in Blackboard. You can print these off of Blackboard and
follow along as you read, adding notes and comments to the lecture notes. You should see the videos for
lectures and use of calculator. This is the primary way you can prepare/study for the weekly assignments
and tests. You are responsible for ALL content in the week we cover in the textbook.
• Complete the required assignments & exams by stated deadlines. There are a total of 15 Weekly
Assignments (WAs), 3 Unit Tests (UTs), and various attendance/participation activities that will need
to be completed over the next 16 weeks. It is extremely important that you complete all of these by the

stated date and time. PLEASE use the Course Calendar under the “START HERE” menu area in
Blackboard to keep up with when assignments are available and deadlines/due dates. The syllabus and
course calendar are extremely useful tools in keeping up with the course.
Ask for help when there is a question or problem. It is imperative that you email, call or see me with
any questions or problems you may have. There are no “stupid” questions. My office hours for this
semester are listed at the top of page 1 of this syllabus. If you need to meet at a time different than my
office hours, please schedule an appointment via email.
Keep copies of all paperwork, including this syllabus, handouts, and all assignments. Not only do I
suggest keeping hard copies (print outs) of all of these documents, keep them saved on your computer as
well. You never know what may happen. Always back yourself up! DO NOT PRINT OUT,
COPY/PASTE OR SAVE UNIT TESTS!
Read & follow all directions given in this syllabus. It is so important that you completely understand
what is expected of you and how things are organized in this course. Read this syllabus numerous times!
Also, print a hard copy for your reference.

Using MyMathLab: To supplement what we do in class; we will be using an online resource called MyMathLab.
This resource is available on any computer that has internet access. I will provide access code to connect to MML.
You need to register for our MML course through the course shell on blackboard. When you get to the main page
for the course, click on “browser check” first to make sure you have certain plugins you will need. Then explore
the site! You will see that you can:
• do homework assignments (which will be required – see below),

check out your grades for the HWK in the gradebook and
view an online version of the book and look at multimedia sources such as on-line video clips,
PowerPoint presentations that go with the book and animations.
Homework Assignments:
Each week I will assign a homework assignment to be completed online using MyMathLab. I also want you to
submit a written homework assignments includes detailed solutions if required. After logging in at
www.MyMathLab.com select “homework” and work the assignment for the day. You will see that, for each
problem, you can choose “help me solve this” for hints, or “view an example”, you can email questions to me,
check out the appropriate section of the online textbook and, in some cases, watch a video clip or look at a
PowerPoint presentation. The template on the left side of your screen enables you to create fractions, exponents,
radicals, etc. You can continue trying each problem until you get it right. You do not have to work the entire
assignment all at one sitting. When you are ready to exit the assignment choose “save”.
Tests and Testing Rules:
• Number of Tests. Over the course of the semester, we will have three tests. Tentative dates for each are
included in the instructional outline and will be online using Respondus Lockdown browser. At the end of
the semester there will be a comprehensive final exam over all the topics we cover all semester long.
• Calculators. Depending on the nature of the topics covered on a test, calculators may or may not be
allowed. In some cases, graphing calculators will be permitted on the entire test. In other cases, there may
be part of the test on which graphing calculators are allowed and another part on which no calculator is
allowed.
• Allowed Materials. The only items you can use during \ a test are writing utensils (pens are allowed but
pencils are strongly recommended) and your calculator for parts of the test on which they are allowed.
You can have additional scratch paper. You cannot bring notes or formula sheets.
• Cell Phones during Tests. Cell phones cannot be used as calculators. All cell phones must be turned off
and put away during tests. Failure to do so will be assumed to be an attempt to cheat
• No Retakes. In this class, and in most college classes, there are no retakes for tests. You will be allowed
to take each test one time only and the grade you make will be the one figured into your overall average.
It is, therefore, very important that you prepare well for each test and do your very best.
Make-up Policy: There will be no make-up for any of the assessments
Discussion Boards: Part of your course grade will be to complete discussion board forums as well (abbreviated
“DB” for Discussion Board (see grade formula).
• How many DBs will there be? There will be a total of 4 graded discussion boards.
• How many points are earned in DBs? Each forum will be worth a maximum of 20 points each. This
includes your initial entry (10 points) and 2 responses to other students’ entries (5 points each). Points will
be earned in respect to participation (yes or no) and whether the question or topic was adequately
addressed and concepts were correctly used. If the DB involves expressing an opinion, you will not be
penalized for your opinion.
• What will the DBs be over? The DBs will typically be directly related to course material introduced that
week. Sometimes it may require you to apply concepts to your life, state an opinion, or conduct review of
material in an external website. Please be prepared to ask questions, share examples, give opinions, and
make comments that are appropriate.
• How are DBs completed? To access the discussion boards, after logging in to the course, click on the
“Discussion Boards” section on the left side menu area. I will post an initial question, thought, or idea.
You will then have a specified time (see course calendar) in which to respond to my posting. After that
initial posting period is past, I will also have a specified time in which you need to respond to 2 other

responses posted by other students. Do not email me your DB reply or response. All DBs are completed
online in Blackboard.
What if I miss a DB? If you miss a discussion board THERE ARE NO MAKE-UPs. You will receive a
zero (0).
What is the instructor looking for in DBs? I am looking for SUBSTANCE AND QUALITY. I expect
this to be college level writing. Simply responding to someone’s posting with “I agree” or “you’re right”
is NOT sufficient. I am looking for critical thinking here! Also, remember this is a college environment.
We want to keep things at a professional level when communicating with each other. Each student is
expected to treat the instructor and fellow students with respect and courtesy…please be respectful of
your classmates and the instructor. Please see the “Netiquette: Online Communications Expectations” area
on page 10 of this syllabus for more information regarding online etiquette.

Grade Inquiries: For your protection and privacy, I do not reveal grades via telephone or email. Grade viewing
will be available via Blackboard. Blackboard will automatically grade Unit Tests, Weekly Assignments. The
instructor will have to manually enter grades for Discussion Boards & Final Exam. Please provide ample time for
the instructor to enter grades into Blackboard. As the course progresses, the instructor will update DB grades. You

Counseling Service: Professional Counselors are available to meet with students by appointment and are located
in the Educational Planning, Counseling, and Completion Offices. Some issues may be addressed on a walk-in
basis. Counselors are master’s level professionals who are trained to provide personal, academic, and career
counseling services. Students often seek counseling services for academic Probation and Suspension, test anxiety,
study and note-taking strategies, time management, academic problems, strategies for managing stress, anxiety
and depression, crisis intervention, career planning and exploration, and community referrals.

Computer Security: A student with a college account is the logon-id owner. As the logon-id owner, the student
is responsible for managing their password. The student is responsible for all actions and functions performed by
their logon-id. A student who provides access to his/her computer logon-id is also providing access to student
records, including transcripts and financial records.
Emergency Response: Call 281-476-9128 on a cell or 5555 on a campus phone for an immediate emergency
response from the San Jacinto College Police Department. They can assist with law enforcement needs.

All ITS-managed computers at San Jacinto College are equipped with a software panic button. To activate,
double-click on the panic button icon. A screen will pop up asking for more information. All fields are optional,
but filling out as much information as possible (some fields may be pre-populated) is recommended. Clicking
“send alert” will notify the police department who will initiate an emergency response as appropriate. Using the
panic button is the equivalent of calling 911 or 5555 and should be used only in emergencies.
Emergency Notification/College Closure: Emergency notifications will always be sent to your college email
address via the College’s Emergency Notification System, SJC AlertMe (https://www.sanjac.edu/alert-me). The
College will also send communications using SJC AlertMe via voice, email, and/or text message to those who
opt-in. If the College is closed, you can check sanjac.edu (https://www.sanjac.edu) or social media accounts.
Use of Student Email: The College provides a free, official email account to all students to ensure efficient and
secure communications between you and the College. Students will be required to use their college-issued email
address to communicate with their instructors and all other college personnel, so it is easy to distinguish a
student's email from spam. The College expects that students will utilize their college email addresses to send and
receive communications with college personnel and will read email on a frequent and consistent basis. To activate

site.
Withdrawal Policy: Faculty are not able to drop students. Students starting college for the first time in fall 2007
or after may only receive six grades of W (grade received from a course dropped after the census date) from all
Texas public colleges and universities attended. Grades of W in developmental courses or courses taken while in
high school will not count in the six grades of W. After six grades of W are received, students must receive grades
of A, B, C, D, or F in all courses. There are other exemptions from the six-drop limit and students should consult
with a Counselor/Educational Planner before they drop courses to determine these exemptions. Students
receiving financial aid must get in touch with the Financial Aid Office before withdrawing from a course. It
is the student's responsibility to drop. The last day to drop this course is: Monday Nov. 11th.
Repeat Rule: If a course is subject to the repeat rule, a student may take the course two times and pay the regular
tuition. The third time, the student will be charged an additional $60.00 of tuition per credit hour for the third or
subsequent time taken.
Classroom Recording Statement: All students are advised that classroom activities may be recorded by the
faculty member and made available within the Blackboard course site for educational use of students presently
enrolled in the class only; they may not be further copied, distributed, published, or otherwise used for any other
purpose without the express written consent of the course instructor. Distribution or sale of class recordings is
prohibited. Distribution without permission is a violation of copyright law. This policy is consistent with San
Jacinto College Policy III.3006.A, Use of Recording Devices by Employees and Students
(https://www.sanjac.edu/policy-iii3006a-use-recording-devices-employees-and-students).
Campus Carry Policy: At San Jacinto College, safety is a priority for our students, our faculty and staff, and our
visitors. On Tuesday, August 1, 2017, the Senate Bill 11 from the 84th Texas legislature, also known as the
Campus Carry law, went into effect for Texas community colleges, including San Jacinto College. This allows
license to carry holders to generally carry concealed handguns at San Jacinto College and other public community
colleges in Texas. The law and the San Jacinto College policy can be found online at Campus Carry
(www.sanjac.edu/campus-carry).
Here are a few key points about the law:
1. The open carry of handguns on campus is prohibited.
2. License to carry holders must carry their handguns on or about their person or secure their handguns in a locked
motor vehicle at all times while on campus. There may be times that students and faculty may not be able to keep
a backpack or handbag near their person at all times during a class. One example is during test times when you
may be required to be separated from your backpack or handbag. Remember to make the necessary arrangements
to legally store your handgun in a locked motor vehicle in advance. San Jacinto College does not provide any
storage for handguns. It is a violation of the law if your handgun is not on or about your person.
3. There are areas designated as exclusion zones on each San Jacinto College campus. The concealed carry of a
handgun is prohibited in these designated exclusion zones. These areas are clearly marked by signage notifying
license to carry holders that entry with a concealed handgun is prohibited.

Graduation Information: Upon completion of degree and/or certificate requirements, the student must apply for
graduation for the credential to be awarded. There is no fee to apply for graduation. Confirm that all requirements
for the degree or certificate are completed or in progress. Print a copy and bring it to the Educational Planning,
Counseling and Completion Office. Submit a Request for Final Graduation Verification with the Degree
Evaluation. The application deadline can be found among important dates in Academic Calendar Dates
(www.sanjac.edu/feature/academic-calendar-dates).
Accessing Blackboard: It is imperative that you attend by logging on to Blackboard at least 3 times per week to
see if any new announcements have been made or any changes have occurred. You need to check your SJC
student e-mail (more details below) at least every other day to see if I have emailed any class information.
PLEASE make sure you keep email addresses and phone numbers CURRENT in SOS as that is the only way I
can contact you. To update contact information, log into SOS and change your personal information. That will
then update Blackboard. If you need to change your address, you will need to contact the enrollment services
office.
Modification of Syllabus: The instructor reserves the right to modify any part of this syllabus and will notify the
class of any changes in a timely manner.
Communication: Below are several different communication methods in this course. No matter what method you
use, please follow the etiquette information listed below.
NETIQUETTE – ONLINE ETIQUETTE:
Netiquette or internet etiquette is defined by netdictionary.com as “the set of informal rules of behavior that have
evolved in Cyberspace, including the Internet and online services.” See the guidelines listed below for online
communication in your distance learning courses. The intended purpose of these guidelines is to encourage
positive and effective online communication within the distance learning environment. Student Expectations:
• Be respectful of the instructor and other students when submitting discussion board postings, emails,
messages, etc.
• Remember the human that sits on the other side of the computer – express your differences of opinions in
a polite, respectful manner being sure to avoid a confrontational or hostile tone.
• Avoid inappropriate and offensive language.
• Use complete sentences and adhere to expected grammar and spelling rules. Avoid IM and/or texting
language.
• Avoid typing communications in ALL CAPS. When used in electronic communications, this is the
equivalent of shouting.
• Consider others’ time and bandwidth. Users access the Internet through a variety of sources – from dialup to DSL. Keep download times reasonable. For example, avoid placing images in the body of your
messages – consider providing an attachment or link instead.
