1 INTRODUCTION:
1.1 History of Sadarghat Launch Terminal
Sadarghat is a river port located on the banks of the river Buriganga.
Sadarghat is originally located in old Dhaka. This Sadarghat has a rivercentric communication system of Dhaka city with all over Bangladesh,
especially with the southern region. This Sadarghat Launch Terminal
operates a total of 45 routes.
The launch-steamer leaves for Patuakhali, Barguna, Bhola, Jhalokati,
Chandpur, Khulna, Bagerhat etc. Babubazar Bridge is located on the east
side of Sadarghat river. This bridge is used to go from keraniganj to
Mawa.
Large fruit shops have sprung up around Sadarghat where different types
of fruits are available in different seasons. Sadarghat is crowded almost
every time. Sadarghat is a river port in old Dhaka around which we are
almost all familiar with the name. It was important even in the early 21st
century around which a commercial town was formed.
Sadarghat has developed a huge fish and fruit business. Dinghy boats
are crossing this shore carrying passengers and goods. All in all,
Sadarghat is a place that is never silent. Once upon a time, in the light of
day, it said goodbye at night and one by one the launches left for the
southern region.
The office of the Collector Magistrate was gradually shifted to the east
of Sadarghat in 1820, and the areas to its north developed as a new town
center. Sadarghat was the gateway to the city of Dhaka which was
founded almost a thousand years ago on the banks of the tree-lined
Buriganga. Which is now the busiest launch service station in the world.
Sadarghat was the main gateway to Dhaka before the smooth flow of
trains and roads. About a century ago, the paddle steamer Masood and
the Ostrich were the main vessels for long-distance navigation. In 1967,
BIWTA built a modern naval terminal at Sadarghat and gradually added
new luxury launches. Which over time became one of the busiest
commercial river ports.
Although the date of the foundation of Sadarghat is not mentioned in
the history, some researchers think that it is about a thousand years old.
Originally the origin and development of the settlements in ancient times
centered on the river. Civilization has progressed and developed in
tandem with the speed of the river but over time many things have
changed. At that time there was no ghat but now there is a launch
terminal. Sadarghat has become a major source of livelihood for many
people as a means of transportation, transportation of goods and trade.
1.2 Objectives of the studies:
Our main objectives of the study are;
 To inform everyone about the present condition of Sadarghat
Launch Terminal.
 To Identify the problems that people face in Sadarghat Launch
Terminal.
 To find out the way to solve these problemes.
2 Revitalised sadarghat as an Economic engine
A re-planned and reconstituted Sadarghat can be a more powerful
economic engine than the ramshackle bazar and ad hoc economy it
thrives on now. There is no denying that there is an active economic in
the area but it is haphazard and myopic and often stands in contradiction
to a larger public good. The new economic benefit deriving from a
reorganization will not only be people of the area but the whole city. The
economic turn should be a way to motivate the citizens stakeholders of
the area in participating in a renewal program. With a re-planned
sadarghat, economic life of area could be revitalised manifold through
new economical generates, such as well planned shops and markets,
business centers, hotels, restaurant and other enterprise, including large
scale cultural and entertainment centres. All this could create a potential
tourist that in turn will generate a new economic progress.
3 Traffic and movement
Traffic through and to sadarghat is key to a sustainable future. At
present, chaos is synonym for traffic and even that would be an
understatement. New modes of access to and from sadarghat linking
critical points in the city have to be create. It can be through modern
rearrangement of existing road and traffic movement, or a little bolder
plan of river connections. Land traffic should be linked to river buses at
strategic stops on the banks. Such nodes could be develop as centres of
new planned activities pedestrian and vehicular traffic along the
riverbank should be carefully segregated so that there is mostly
uninterrupted pedestrian movement. The current flood protection wall
built above the existing street level gives a cue to build an elevated
walkways or promenade above the wall. The lower level could be used
as vehicular road, car park or some commercial functions.
4 Activities in the capital Sadarghat
The Sadarghat commercial place was started by a trading post in the 19th
century. This river port is located on the banks of the river Buriganga.
About 200 large and small passenger launches depart and arrived at the
terminal every day. According to the official at the terminal,30000
people, on average, use the terminal for departure and arrival every day.
Very close to it are the book publishing bases Bangla bazar, Jagannath
University, Baldha Garden and Ahsan Manzil and, above all, the vast
warehouses for various river transport products, especially fish and fruit.
Here you can find all kinds of daily necessities and they are available at
both wholesale and retail prices. The vegetables are very fresh. People
in the vicinity of Sadarghat buy all the necessary vegetables from here.
As vegetables are available much cheaper than other places, the lowerclass people can also buy their essential vegetables. Fish is also available
in Sadarghat at affordable prices and almost all kinds of fish can be
bought here. Small traders buy fish and vegetables from here at
wholesale prices and sell them at retail. Sadarghat is also rich in fruit
market. Various fruits such as apples, oranges, dates, bananas, coconuts,
pears, quince, seasonal fruits like mango, litchi, jackfruit, raw palms and
all kinds of fruits are traded. If you go inside Sadarghat, you can see some
small shopkeepers who have many kinds of fried food including Muri
Jhalai, Mango Jhalai, Chanachur, Badam Jhalai which are very popular
among the people and they said it's tasty. Many people come from all
over the country and abroad to enjoy the natural beauty of the port and
they have to buy a ticket and the price of each ticket has been fixed at Tk
10 by the Sadarghat authorities. Above all, there is another type of
professional people here, who have made this place more beautiful and
attractive are the dinghy boatmen. They can be seen here all the time.
The main attraction of Sadarghat is these small boats. There is no such
thing as a pleasure to ride a river or to be found anywhere else. Those
who get so much pleasure from us take a very small amount of money
from us.
5 The role of Sadarghat in making a living
Sadarghat is a river port in the early Dhaka city of Bangladesh which is
surrounded by a business town in the 19th century. Indeed it is an
important place for transportation of goods. Employment of different
levels of people has developed in Sadarghat. The following is the
contribution of Sadarghat in the field of business:
Pan betel nut shop: If I could find a beautiful face, I would make banana
and feed it on the khili wire of Sadarghat. The poet wrote a song about
betel in Sadarghat.
Raw vegetable shops: Fresh vegetables come from remote areas of the
country by boat which many people make a living by selling.
Fruit shops: Different types of fruits are produced well in different
districts of the country. Fruits come to Sadarghat by river from all these
districts.
Cloth shop: At one time muslin sari made in Dhaka used to go to
different places by river. Even now different types of cloth go to different
places by river.
There are also many businesses through which many people make a
living. Now small children can be seen at the launch who make a living
by selling water, biscuits, tea. The middlemen make a living by sailing.
7 RECOMMENDATION
A model can be developed for enhancing to the service quality of
Sodurghat launch terminal. From our survey, on the basis of the study
we strongly recommend the following.
 Ticket Counter System
Although there is an online app called "Jaljatra" for purchasing tickets, it
is frequently unavailable. Infact, there's no billboard for ticket prize. It is
vital to create a billboard advertising the destination and prize so that
passengers can conveniently buy tickets.
 Security Issue
The passenger clearance system is inadequate. With a ticket costing 10
taka, everyone can enter the terminal. There are 12 entrances to the
terminal, but only two have security guards. The remaining 10 entrance
need to be secured.
 Waiting Room
For the VIP passengers, there is no waiting room. As a consequence, it's
important to have a VIP passenger waiting room. Another good idea is to
provide any book storage or newspaper for travelers. Also there isn’t any
air condition system in first class waiting room, and the first class waiting
room only has two Fan.
 Toilet Facility
It is important to increase the number of toilets in the terminal. There is
also no toilet for VIPs, so one will have to be installed. There is a need for
a separate toilet for children.
 Storage Facilities at Terminal
At each level of each Terminal, sufficient storage facilities must be
incorporated to meet the functional needs of the operational Terminal
as well as the demands of the maintainers. In most cases, storage space
will be created in the following areas. For paper and customer care
products, there is a customer service center at the entrance/concourse
level. Stores connected to retail activities are located at the
entrance/concourse level of a retail service store.
 Lighting System
The Deck's lighting system is terrible. There is only one light on each
station ramp. The deck's lighting system could also be improved.
 Emergency Service
There is no medical assistance available. As a result, it is crucial to provide
a medical emergency service for passengers.
 Fire Extinguisher Facility
Since there are only six fire extinguishers, more fire extinguishers are
needed.
 Cleanliness of platform
For waste products, there isn't enough waste bin. It's also vital to create
a rule that anybody who throws trash on the platform or deck will be
fined.
 Loading and Unloading System
There aren’t any cargo cranes, side-loading systems with conveyors, side
shifters or elevators. It is important to put that system. Also using a range
of truck unloaders is a great idea for loading and unloading system.
CONCLUSION
Sadarghat Launch Terminal's service quality needs to be improved. The
worst-case scenario, according to the report, is the Security Issue, and
the next concern is the lack of a canteen. As a result, people are forced
to purchase food from hawkers. The hawkers often draw a large crowd.
There isn’t any maintenance for hawkers. There is also no mechanism in
place to notify passengers when the launch has left or arrived at the
quay. Passengers have to suffer into their launch journey. It is high time
for the government to develop Sadarghat Launch Terminal.
