THE COMPUTER
KEYBOARD
The computer keyboard is an input device
used to enter characters and functions into
the computer system by pressing buttons or
keys.
It is the primary device used to enter text.
A keyboard typically contains keys for
individual letters, numbers, and special
characters, as well as keys for specific
function
The computer keyboard is the main typing
area of the computer which resembles the
characters of a standard typewriter.
It is a set of typewriter-like keys that enables
you to enter data into a computer.
Computer keyboards are similar to electrictypewriter keyboards but contain additional
keys.
GROUP OF KEYS IN THE KEYBOARD
1. ALPHANUMERIC KEYS
include the same letter,
number, punctuation, and
symbol keys found on a
traditional typewriter
Typing text
Whenever you need to type something in a program, email message, or text box, you’ll see a blinking vertical
line (I). That’s the cursor, also called the insertion point.
It shows where the text that you type will begin.
In addition to letters, numerals, punctuation marks, and
symbols, the typing keys also include SHIFT, CAPS LOCK,
TAB KEY, ENTER KEY, SPACEBAR, and BACKSPACE.
2. CONTROL KEYS
These are keys used alone
or in combination with other
keys to perform certain
actions.
CONTROL KEY-Usually used with other keys to
perform specific functions
ESCAPE KEY-Used to exit a menu

CTRL Z - undo
CTRL E - center align
CTRL L - left align
CTRL R - right align
CTRL J - justify
CTRL A - highlight all
CTRL X - cut
CTRL C - copy
CTRL V - paste
CTRL ALT DEL- shutdown
3. FUNCTION KEYS
The function keys are used to perform specific
tasks. They are labeled F1, F2, F3, and so on, up to
F12. The functionality of these keys differs from
program to program.
Print Screen (PrtScr) which copies screen to
Clipboard

These keys are used for
moving around in a
document or Web pages
and editing text.

cursor, the selected text; in
Windows, delete the selected item
and move it to the Recycle Bin
5. NUMERIC KEYBOARD PAD
The numeric keypad is handy for
entering numbers quickly. The
keys are grouped together in a
block
like
a
conventional
calculator or adding machine.
Numeric keypad keys assume a dual role. The Num lock
key is the toggle between numbers and cursor control.
Key functions change each time NumLock is pressed.

TYPING POSITION
Choose chair that helps you keep your
sitting posture and Supports your lower
back
feet flat on the floor
Your keyboard should be at a height that
allows your elbows to be bent about 90
degrees and close to your sides.
TYPING POSITION
Center your keyboard in front of you. If your keyboard has a numeric
keypad, you can use the spacebar as the centering point.
Type with your hand and wrists floating above the keyboard, so that you
can use your whole arm to reach for distant keys instead of stretching
your fingers.
Avoid resting your palms or wrists on any type of surface while typing.
If your keyboard has a palm rest, use it only during breaks from typing.
When you’re not typing, relax your arms and hands.
Take short breaks from computer use every 15 to 20 minutes.
