Rationale Social media addiction can significantly impact students' academic performance. When students spend too much time on social media platforms, it can lead to distractions and affect their ability to concentrate on their studies. Social media addiction can also lead to procrastination, which can result in students missing deadlines and performing poorly on their assignments. Consequently, their grades may suffer, and they may not achieve their full academic potential. Social media addiction can have adverse effects on students' mental health. Students who spend excessive amounts of time on social media platforms are at risk of developing anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. These problems can further exacerbate the negative effects of social media addiction on academic performance. Therefore, it is important to examine the relationship between social media addiction and mental health among grade 11 CSS senior high school students. Social media addiction can lead to the erosion of students' social skills. Students who spend too much time on social media platforms may find it challenging to develop meaningful relationships in the real world. This lack of social skills can have long-lasting effects on their academic and personal lives. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the impact of social media addiction on the development of social skills among grade 11 CSS senior high school students. The Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) has created rules on mobile devices in response to the issue that most of our school’s encounter. The department began to restrict phone use during class time in 1999, as stated in DECS orders number 70 in 1999 and 26 in 2000. The department's rules are meant to help students concentrate more on their studies and less on their smartphones, even if social media has not yet evolved. The department worries that student use of mobile devices will have more unsettling consequences, such as addiction. One of these can be prolonged, excessive usage of smartphones and other technological devices for social media browsing. Together with the very rapid digitalization in our age, the use of social media is increasing in our country and the world (Ersöz & Kahraman, 2020; Singh et al., 2020). According to the Digital 2021: Global Overview Report, the time spent on social media has increased 1.5 times in the last 5 years. The most widely used social networks are listed as Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, FB Messenger, Instagram, WeChat, TikTok, and QQ (DataReportal, 2021a). When the way of dealing with social media addiction is examined, it can be said that nowadays, social media addiction has ceased to be an ordinary problem and become a disease associated with a global epidemic. People all over the world can show excessive interest in social media and spend a great deal of time using social media. For this reason, social media hurts the lives of millions of people in the world (Andreassen, 2015; Singh et al., 2020). The proliferation of social media platforms has transformed the way people communicate and interact with each other. The use of social media has become ubiquitous, especially among young people. Social media addiction is a phenomenon that has become increasingly prevalent among adolescents. The effects of social media addiction on the academic performance of students have attracted considerable attention from scholars and educators alike. Therefore, examining the effect of social media addiction on grade 11 CSS senior high school students is crucial. Examining the effect of social media addiction on grade 11 CSS senior high school students can help educators and parents identify effective strategies to prevent and mitigate social media addiction. By understanding the factors that contribute to social media addiction among students, educators, and parents can develop interventions that promote healthy social media use. These interventions can include educating students on the risks associated with social media addiction, encouraging the use of technology in moderation, and promoting healthy lifestyle choices. The study has the potential to provide valuable insights and recommendations for addressing social media addiction and promoting academic success among this population. Review of Related Literature The literature review conducted by Gbenga Emmanuel Ojo and Olufemi Adetunji (2020) explores the relationship between social media use and academic performance among university students. The authors analyzed several studies on the topic and found that social media use can have both positive and negative effects on academic performance. On the positive side, social media can provide opportunities for collaboration, communication, and information sharing among students, which can enhance their learning and academic performance. Additionally, social media can be used as a tool for academic research and information gathering. However, the authors also found that excessive social media use can have negative effects on academic performance. Social media addiction can lead to distraction, decreased motivation, and poor time management, which can negatively impact academic performance. Furthermore, excessive social media use can also lead to sleep deprivation, which can further affect academic performance. Ayesha Iftikhar and Aqsa Zafar (2019) present findings related to the time spent on social media, multitasking behavior, self-regulation, information-seeking behavior, and engagement in online communities. They provide a comprehensive synthesis of existing research on the impact of social media use on the academic performance of undergraduate students. His literature review found that excessive social media use can negatively impact academic performance by reducing students' attention spans, increasing procrastination, and decreasing motivation. Additionally, social media addiction can lead to sleep deprivation, which can further impact academic performance. Therefore, this literature review states that social media addiction can cause negative effects to students’ academic performance. Excessive and problematic use of social media in adolescence is associated with excessive and problematic use of smartphones and with the parallel usage of multiple devices (Lachmann et al., 2018) Overuse of smartphones has been found to be associated with various negative consequences, such as problems in social interactions, being socially isolated, as well as well-being problems (including anxiety, depression, and stress) (Griffiths et al., 2018). Social networks, as part of social media (Kumar and Banik, 2019), in addition to meeting cultural and social needs, enable individuals to perform social activities through computers or smartphones, track their activity in these virtual communities, and interact with other people (Tunc-Aksan and Akbay, 2019). Social media usage has increased exponentially globally (Kizgin et al., 2018), and the omnipresence of social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram has led some users to experience symptoms of addiction (Griffiths et al., 2018). This states that many users of social media have become addicted to it and most of them are students. And it affected many aspects of their life, especially their performance at school. The review by Anwar and Bashir (2018) provides a comprehensive overview of the existing literature on the relationship between social media use and academic performance. The authors conducted a thorough search of academic databases and identified 20 studies that met their inclusion criteria. The review covers a wide range of aspects of academic performance, including grades, test scores, and academic achievement. The authors found that social media use was positively associated with lower academic performance, particularly in the areas of grades and test scores. This finding is consistent with other studies that have also found a negative relationship between social media use and academic performance. This literature review has proven that social media has caused students to get low scores and grades at school. Social media has negatively affected students’ academic performance. According to Duvince Zhalimar Dumpit, Cheryl Joy Fernandez,(2017). Related literature entitled “Analysis of the Use of social media in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) using the Technology Acceptance Model”, Given the data collected, we ran as series of statistical tests to determine the factors affecting actual use. There were three statements relating to ‘perceived playfulness (PP),’ ‘perceived usefulness (PU),’ ‘perceived ease of use (PEOU),’ ‘subjective norm (SN),’ and, ‘intention to use (IU). We examined whether responses are statistically correlated and whether outcomes may be combined into fewer variables. With these data collected, we can conclude that social media has really given a negative impact to the academic performance of students. Review of Related Studies According to the study of Johnson et al. in 2019, this study sought to determine the association between high school students’ use of social media and their academic achievement. Students in Grade 11 from various high schools participated in a survey to provide information about their use of social media and academic standing. The findings showed a significant inverse relationship between academic achievement and social media addiction. Students' grades tended to suffer in direct proportion to how attached they were to social media. Additionally, the study found that spending too much time on social media sites reduced study time and increased procrastination, which eventually affected the students' overall academic performance. Students always set-asides their school work because their addiction to social media causes them to procrastinate that results to getting a low grades. These findings highlight the need for therapies and measures to deal with high school students’ addiction to social media. A study entitled "Exploring the Relationship between Social Media Addiction and Psychological Well-being Among Adolescents" by Smith et al., (2020) looked at the relationship between social media addiction and adolescents' psychological health, including pupils in grade 11. A sample of high school students were surveyed and interviewed by the researchers as part of a mixed-methods technique used to collect data. The results showed a significant positive link between social media addiction and indications of poor psychological health, including elevated levels of anxiety, despair, and loneliness. The study made clear that excessive usage of social networking sites encouraged addictive behaviors, which in turn caused unfavorable emotional states and diminished general well-being. Additionally, it stressed the significance of educating teenagers about the potential repercussions of social media addiction and encouraging good online behaviors. These two review summaries provide insights into the impact of social media addiction on Grade 11 CSS Senior High School students. They indicate a negative correlation between social media addiction and academic performance, as well as its detrimental effects on psychological well-being. Theoretical Background Social Cognitive Theory, proposed by Albert Bandura, focuses on the reciprocal interaction between individuals, their behavior, and the social environment. In the context of social media addiction, this theory suggests that individuals learn and develop addictive behaviors through observational learning, where they observe and imitate the behaviors of others in their social environment. For instance, if students witness their peers spending excessive time on social media platforms, they may be more likely to engage in similar addictive behaviors. Additionally, the theory emphasizes the role of self-efficacy, which refers to individuals' beliefs in their ability to exert control over their behaviors. Low self-efficacy may contribute to a lack of self-regulation in managing social media usage, leading to addiction and potential negative consequences on academic performance. The Uses and Gratifications Theory focuses on individuals' motivations for using media and the gratifications they seek from these media experiences. Applied to social media addiction, this theory suggests that students may turn to social media platforms to fulfill specific needs, such as social interaction, entertainment, information, or selfexpression. However, excessive reliance on social media for gratification can lead to addiction and adverse outcomes. For instance, if students prioritize social media interactions over academic tasks, their grades may suffer. Understanding the underlying motives and gratifications sought by Grade 11 CSS students in their social media usage can provide valuable insights into the potential impact of addiction on their academic performance. By grounding the study in these theoretical frameworks, researchers can provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to social media addiction among Grade 11 CSS Senior High School students and its effects on their academic performance. These theories offer lenses through which to analyze the interplay between individuals, their behaviors, motivations, and the social environment in the context of social media addiction.
