the impact of global aging

advertisement
Introduc on
Global aging refers to the process of popula on aging, driven primarily by declining fer lity
rates and increased life expectancy (Sciubba, 2020). Numerous ndings have associated global
aging with economic slowdown and adverse e ects on society, par cularly to healthcare system
( Grinin, Grinin and Korotayev, 2023). Padeiro, Santana and Grant(2023) demonstrated the
gures of life expectancy has increased by more than two-fold compared in 1900. Addressing
the implica ons of aging popula on to society is thus a crucial issue as it is rapidly accelera ng
worldwide. This essay will explain the problema c e ect of global aging on healthcare
infrastructure and cri cally evaluate one poten al solu on.
Problem
One of the most serious consequences of global aging is the shortages of healthcare system.
Padeiro, Santana and Grant (2023) revealed the rising number of older popula on have been
experiencing chronic diseases, and the burden of mortality and morbidity. This trend prompts
numerous inquiries regarding health equity, par cularly concerning access to healthcare
services and resources among di erent demographic groups (Padeiro, Santana and Grant,
2023). This situa on could worsen further by the ongoing increase in the severity of old-age in
recent years. According to Visual Capitalist (2020), since the 1980s, the older popula on has
been increasing among most of OECD countries, where the number of elderly people per 100
working-age individuals is projected to almost triple, rising from 20 in 1980 to 58 by 2060. There
will be a projected 10% decline in the global working-age popula on a er the following 4
decades and it will be most pronounced in countries such as Japan and Korea, where it is
expected to plummet by 35% or more (Visual Capitalist, 2020). Rising elderly popula on and
declining working-age demographics will strain healthcare systems, exacerba ng shortages.
Consequently, the seniors typically require more medical a en on and healthcare services to
manage their health condi ons, which posing challenges to en re healthcare framework.
Solu on
The development and promo on of age-friendly environment may mi gate the shortcomings in
the healthcare systems caused by popula on aging. According to Levasseur et al. (2017) , the

features of an age-friendly community should include outdoor spaces and buildings , accessible
transporta on , housing , opportuni es for social par cipa on, and community support and
health services. Moreover, Padeiro, Santana and Grant (2023) claimed that elderly individuals
devote the majority of their me at home and within their local community. Nevertheless, they
rely heavily on its resources and their residen al environment compared to other demographic
groups (Padeiro, Santana and Grant, 2023). More speci cally, the individual choices decrease
the risk of illness and disability by managing and rising a high level of cogni ve , physical
capabili es, and par cipate in life ac vely ( Padeiro, Santana and Grant, 2023). Furthermore,
Levasseur et al. (2017) found that, in Canada, the process of elder-friendly environment is
implemented by all provinces and its ini a ves is launched to approximately 800 communi es,
which received mostly posi ve results.
Evalua on
Advantage
The key advantage of age-friendly environment is likely the reduc on of medical costs. By
crea ng age-friendly surroundings, it can lead to favorable health results to the seniors ( Hong
et al. ,2023). More precisely, it addresses the health risks by promo ng healthy behaviors and
o ering a more convenient access to preven ve cares such as vaccina ons and wellness
program. Levasseur et al. (2017) indicated that this solu on decreases the expense of medical
treatment and care service since it reduced disability rates and premature mortality associated
with chronic diseases. As a result, age-friendly environment can reduce the overall expenditure
of healthcare and lead to long-term saving for individuals and economics.
Disadvantage
The major disadvantage of aforemen oned poten al solu on is coverage. The e ec veness of
implemen ng this solu on in rural areas is far less than in urban communi es. The strength of
the rural area included close social connec ons and local belonging, while its challenges
included inadequate facili es, sca ered popula on, substan al distances, and popula on aging
caused by outward migra on ( Levasseur et al. , 2017 ). More importantly, there is de cient
service supply in rural communi es. Yu, Ma, and Wang (2021) highlighted that nearly 45% of
the region is serviced in countrysides, whereas the coverage rate stands at around 80% in ci es .

Therefore, it appears essen al to make relevant improvement of age-friendly environment in
countrysides.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this essay has discussed one issue of global aging which is healthcare system
insu ciency and cri cally evaluated one solu on which is age-friendly environment. There are
various way to deal with health provision problems , but age-friendly environment may
eventually prove more useful. Currently, the solu on is s ll insu cient to reduce the healthcare
issues for rural ci zens. Nevertheless, this issue is likely to be solved as the system improves and
matures. Extensive publicity and establishment of infrastructure could be the answer as severe
aging increase world-widely. Ul mately, it is impera ve to ac vely address and solve aging
challenges, which will remain a crucial topic of global importance in the following years.
