Introduction
The T2004-Axx Multi-Control Head system allows the use of between one
and five control heads with a single T2020 or T2040 radio. The control
heads are configured as one primary and up to four secondary control heads.
The primary control head controls the power to the radio and each of the
secondary control heads. Otherwise the functionality of all the control heads
is the same.
The Multi-Control Head allows the distance between the radio and the
remote control heads to be much greater than the usual 6 metres between a
radio and remote control head. Refer to the system description and
specifications for the system requirements.

1.1
System Description
The Multi-Control Head system includes the following components:
■
one T2020 or T2040 radio with T2008 power supply unit (not supplied
with kits)
■
2km maximum multi-drop line (not supplied)
■
one T2004-A20 or T2004-A40 primary Multi-Control Head kit
■
between one and four T2004-A21 or T2004-A41 secondary MultiControl Head kit (optional)
The equipment supplied consists of two kits, designed to connect to your
existing series II T2020 or T2040 radio and T2008 power supply:
■
the T2004-A20 (T2020) or the T2004-A40 (T2040) primary MultiControl Head Kit;
■
the T2004-A21 (T2020) or T2004-A41 (T2040) secondary MultiControl Head Kit (not required if only one control head is used in the
system).
The T2004-A20 or T2004-A40 primary Multi-Control Head Kit contains
the primary control head as well as the Radio Interface PCB. This PCB is
housed inside a blank control head and replaces the standard control head on
the radio. The radio can be concealed if required, as all radio controls are
accessed via the primary control head.
The T2004-A21 or T2004-A41 secondary Head Kit provides one
secondary control head and other equipment needed to install the control
head for use with the radio.

Each control head can be installed anywhere on a multi-drop line up to
2000m long, and is powered locally by a mains-operated DC plug pack (Not
supplied in kit). A speaker connects to each control head to provide local Tx
and Rx audio.
1.2
Operation
The control heads provide the same functionality as the standard T2000
control head, but will not allow a DTMF module to be fitted. In addition,
the control heads provide some extra functions:
■
Global Mute
The Global Mute function is provided to avoid the possibility of
audio feedback when two or more control heads are placed in close
proximity. This function is individually selectable on each control
head, via the JP1 link on the control head PCB. Refer to the System
Manual for further information.
■
Power Switch Selection
The Power Switch Selection function is provided so that only one
control head in the system (the primary control head) is able to control the system’s power. This function is selectable by the fitting of a
jumper JP2 on the control head PCB of the primary control head.
Refer to the System Manual for further information.

Installation
This section describes how to install the T2004-Ax0 primary Multi-Control
Head Kit and the T2004-Ax1 secondary Multi-Control Head Kit.
The installation requires:
2.1
■
replacing the standard radio control head with the X2AM01 Multi-Head
Radio Interface PCB fitted inside a blank control head (supplied with the
primary Head Kit)
■
installing the primary control head, using the radio microphone and
speaker
■
if required, installing the secondary control heads.
Fitting the X2AM01 Radio Interface PCB
1.
From your T2020 or T2040 radio, remove microphone and speaker,
and set aside for use with the primary control head.
2.
Unscrew the four screws shown below and remove the top cover of
the radio.

15
3.
Remove the three screws holding the Control PCB and fold out the
PCB. Then remove the three bottom cover screws.
The bottom cover of the radio can now be removed.
4.
16
Remove the TCXO PCB to ease control head cable removal.

5.
Unhook the adapter plate from the chassis. and remove the control
head cable from the Control PCB.
6.
Remove the screws fixing the control head to the adapter plate and
remove the control head.
7.
Clip the adapter plate back into the chassis and reattach the bottom
cover with the three screws that were previously removed.
8.
Fit fibre washers between the chassis and the X2AM01 Interface PCB
before screwing the PCB into the adapter plate. Use the four M3
screws and fibre washers supplied in the plastic bag with the PCB.
9.
Using the micromatch cable supplied with the PCB, connect one end
to S9 on the Control PCB and the other end to SK1 on the MultiControl Head Interface PCB.
10.
Fit the TCXO PCB back into the RF PCB.
11.
Reassemble Control PCB and Top Cover.

12.
Attach the blank control head supplied, using the four screws in the
bag with the control head.
13.
Plug the micromatch connector from the RJ45 cable into the
micromatch socket SK3 on the Interface PCB and fit the cover plate
and screw hole covers.
14.
Plug the other end of the RJ45 cable from the radio into the RJ45
Wallbox.

2.2
Installing the Control Heads
(primary and secondary)
1.
Mount the control head using the bracket with the screws provided.
2.
Connect the DC plug pack to the power cable and then to the control
head.
3.
Connect the speaker connector to the matching two-pin connector
from the plug pack cable.
4.
Connect microphone:
■
Mount microphone clip close to control head.
■
Ensure that the ground tag from the plug pack cable is secured
firmly to the clip. To avoid ground loops, ensure the microphone
clip is isolated from any local ground.
■
Plug the microphone into the control head.
5.
Plug the micromatch connector from the RJ45 cable (supplied) into
the J5 at the rear of the control head PCB.
6.
Fit the cover plate using a screwdriver to close the hatch.
7.
Plug the other end of the cable into the RJ45 wallbox.
Note
2.3
The DC plug pack for the secondary head should be connected to
a 24-hour mains outlet in order for the secondary head to always
function correctly. Display errors will occur if power is removed
and replaced without resetting the radio via the primary head.
Secondary heads have a programmed delay of 10 seconds from initial power on, where keypresses will not be actioned.
DC Plugpack installation
The DC plugpack needs to be fitted to the power cable by cutting off the
2.5mm DC Plug as close as possible to the plug. Strip 5-6mm of insulation
from each wire and attach to the Pheonix connector as shown below.
A voltmeter is required to find the DC polarity of the plugpack cable, as this
differs between various models. Connect the negative wire to pin 1 of the
connector and the positive wire to pin 2.

Multi-Drop Cable Specifications
Note
This cable is not supplied by TEL as part of the Multi-Control
Head system.
The multi-drop cable is a 4x twisted pair overall screen cable (CAT5 or
similar) used for cabling within the building. The length of this cable can be
up to 2km.
RJ45 Wallboxes (supplied) are fitted at intervals along the multi-drop cable
and provide the junction between the remote control heads and the building
network.
The RJ45 cable (219-02900-00) supplied with the kits connects from the
control heads to the RJ45 Wallbox. The table below shows the pin
assignment for the RJ45 connector at one end of the cable:

The RJ45 Wallboxes supplied with each kit are connected in a multidrop
arrangement (i.e. all pins are connected in parallel), with one wallbox for
each control head and one wallbox for the Radio Interface PCB.
The recommended cable type used for the multi-drop cable the connector
to the RJ45 Wallbox is M&M cables b2004 ESCS 4 x twisted pair/overall
screen.

■
Data 2A and 2B
Note
Polarity of the data pairs is important. Earthing of the cable screen
should only occur at the radio interface wallbox.
Note
Some Cat 5 cable installations (normally used for network or
PABX connection) have pin reversal on some or all pins. Check
connection polarities if control heads do not function as expected.
